I’ve wanted to get this shot for a while. I’ve been using someone else’s photo whenever I do lectures on the Liljestrand House, and finally had the opportunity to get it. No cars in the driveway (except for the Porsche), the house looking quiet, modest, and mysterious. The driveway coming in on that 3/4 angle, the dense foliage hiding the views, the light coming through the house with peekaboo views of the ocean way beyond. The rustic mountain house will give way to the refined minimalist retreat. . @liljestrand_house is kind enough to let me bring my third year BEnvD students here every year. This year I brought three times as many, but they were just as gracious of hosts as ever. Extremely grateful for everything they do for not only the legacy of the house, family, and architect, but also what they do for the community. Now that the sliding doors on the bottom floor open again after decades, this corner has a whole new feel to it. Feels lighter, slimmer, more skeletal. The steel structure being exposed now too adds to the new look as well - humble wood mountain house just got an modern twist. Enjoy every corner of this place. . Couldn’t teach a studio on architecture in Hawaii without bringing the students to the Liljestrand House. I can appreciate a bedroom like this. The monumental coral walls, the floating platform bed and night stands, the board and batten ceilings, and the sliding glass doors with light pouring in from the lanai. It’s a minimalist’s bedroom, and there’s something heroic and beautiful about it. . The space that is under roof is essentially cut in half, with one half being more typically ‘interior,’ and the other half being ‘exterior’ with the outside wall completely missing. Dividing these two halves are sliding glass doors and large coral rock or plaster walls. The materiality makes no distinction between in or out. True environmental living. .
