Helloo!! If you're a writer for Voltron how would you write and tackle an insecurity and growth arc for Lance without using Allura as a plot device and relying on a love triangle instead?
Hello Anon, thanks for this interesting question.
Hmm, well insecurity is a tricky one and if I was a writer for Voltron I think that I would have a combination of praise and positive reinforcement/support from people surrounding him with some internal struggles culminating in a personal battle against some manifestation of his own insecurities and demons.
So throughout the series there would be points where Lance, in times of doubt would be comforted or praised about certain abilities, missions, skills etc. These wouldn't have to be big moments, they could be something quick like Hunk asking Lance to helo him do something because Lance is much better at it than he is/has a talent for. I would also have someone like Lotor recognise Lance's talents or value as something like this coming from someone he envies or is jealous of could also reinforce that he has value and talent. Interestingly enough I think that this scenario wilk happen in season 8 where Lotor will teach Lance to wield an Altaean broadsword and I think that while Lance will quickly lose any sparing match they have Lotor wilk recognise Lance's potential and will point it out to him. Lance will be surprised as it is one thing to have your friends recognise your talents but to have an enemy or someone who isn't your friend point it out to you is much bigger. There could also be bigger moments like in the episode where Lance, Shiro and Pidge free Slav from prison where Lance spent a good chunk of the episode expressing his fear that he wasn't good enough to be a paladin anymore. Lance doesn't feel that valuable or or believes himself to be as talented as his friends but as both Lance and the audience sees he is a very talented sharpshooter and had he not been on that mission then Slav would have never of escaped. This was a great way to address Lance's insecurity as he proved to himself why he is a valuable and indispensable member of the team. I would include that episode as it is a nice way to have Lance's insecurities addressed as Lance proves to himself why he is a valuable member of Voltron.
The second part of this would involve some sort of magic as well as separating Lance from his friends for most of an episode. They would be on a mission but things would suddenly turn bad and Lance would somehow find himself alone. Lance, blaming himself for the problems on the mission would be confronted by a magical being of some kind which would look into his mind, find his insecurities and try to overwhelm him by feeding said insecurities. Lance would see his friends telling him how unimportant and worthless he is and, at the moment of his greatest despair, a vision of himself telling him just how useless he is. Lance, at first would give in and let these manifestations overwhelm him but then Lance, would have a moment of realisation and would begin to fight back, perhaps he remembers all the times his friends told him just how important he is to them or perhaps one of the manifestations says the wrong thing and Lance, disagreeing witg what it said snaps out og his despair and fights back. The manifestations and the creature/being creating them try to fight him but Lance fights back, literally fighting his own insecurities and demons. It's a tough battle but Lance refuses to give in, knowing and understanding that he has strength and talent and while it is different from his friends and fellow paladins and while they may not always be needed he is still a worthy member of the team. Lance then finally defeats the being/creature and reunites with his friends, more self assured and confident in himself. This would happen in the shows final season and would serve as the end of Lance's personal arc. He needs to overcome these feelings himself and recognise his own value in order to grow.
Given how difficult it can be to overcome your insecurities Lance would not be magically cured at the end of the shows run, however, he would be strong enough and more self aware to not only recognise his own insecurities and how they affect him but also give him the ability to cope and deal with them. Lance would also probably end the show with some rituals that would help him when his insecurities begin to overwhelm him.
can someone please explain why if Shiro had been gone for a year he still has short hair and an under cut?
