Vlune
A late review
I was putting up reviewing Vlune because I thought Vlogvember was perfect and I didn’t want a sequel to this organic built series, but I took the bullet and had a look and I had two thoughts.
The series takes in the format of a roadtrip, one going from New York to Los Angeles, a typical go west narrative, where brash young men go out to find an opportunity and it’s the same thing here with Adrian and Greg, and instead of gold, they are looking for fame in Vidcon.
And you might notice this, but I think the placement of America was well used to Adrian’s favor, I think there’s New York and DC giving us an establishment and Ohio giving us a sense of home. Their day at Cedar Point mirrors their final scene in Disneyland, as to bring back the scene home. We get to Chicago, where we have industry and commerce and they start to infiltrate with Logan, the reporter, who brings common sensibility that is typically associated with the midwest and he leaves in Denver, which kind of the last frontier of that midwest. Then we get to the hardest part, the wild west and we’re met with temptation and fear in form of Beth and we further the theme of isolation and temptation with the videos in Las Vegas, and eventually settling in Los Angeles, which became a new establishment and Adrian slowly making their his way to his home place, which is to be with Greg.
Second thought is how Adrian, I don’t know if this is intentional or not, come up as little autistic... like how he want to have friendship but doesn’t understand the social cues and tries to imitate others who he believes to be successes but fail miserably. In fact, I could probably include Greg and Beth into this neurodivergent sphere. Greg is silent, and his feeling doesn’t feel complex but he feels close to Adrian and maybe is the one that truly understand him. Beth also wants a sense of self-worth, but caught up in the glamour and promises of social media. She talks and talks and says nothing... because she can’t bear to think about her hollowness. Is little bit clear that Beth is actually in the same place as Adrian, no one likes her and she doesn’t understand the social order as much, or least she would have done something in the wilderness... what I’m trying to say is that she’s a lost cause.
Yeah, I think that’s my skewed spin on Vlune. It was satisfying. 9/10.
