WHILE OTHER COUNTRIES PUT WALLS UP, KIWIS SEND A MESSAGE OF UNITY AND INCLUSION
VMLY&R has created a campaign for Refugees as Survivors New Zealand (RASNZ) that sends a message of unity and inclusion at a time where other countries have embraced divisive slogans like ‘Build the wall’ and ‘Stop the boats’.
Instead, New Zealand is doing what it does best: welcoming people to its shores with #KiwisWelcome – a campaign created by VMLY&R New Zealand for RASNZ as part of VMLY&R Worldwide Foundation Day. To celebrate the network’s first anniversary, VMLY&R closed all 82 offices across the globe for a day to give more than 6,500 employees the opportunity to support their communities through volunteer projects.
Kim Pick, ECD at VMLY&R, joined AD STARS 2019 as a Final Judge and was part of a team who brought the campaign to life. She said: “We’re extremely grateful to the incredible New Zealanders who generously stepped up from where they were around the world to give their time and their voices, before and during lockdown, to create a message of unity and inclusion. And also to our partners at Exposure, Franklin Road, BCW and JCDecaux for joining us to support RASNZ and make #KiwisWelcome for World Refugee Day.”
The campaign was created in the lead up to World Refugee Day on 20 June to confront how New Zealanders view refugees.
It features well-known Kiwis including former NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark, actor Sam Neill and ex-All Black and mental health advocate John Kirwan. Together, they remind people that when refugees settle in New Zealand, they’re no longer refugees – they’re Kiwis, like everyone else.
VMLY&R worked with Exposure and Franklin Road to produce the video.
