ESXi 5 Guests will not boot
I have a problem with Guests not booting under VMWare ESXi 5.0 on my IBM x3550M3 server.
Note: Investigation eventually determined that problem was with the VMware client on a Lenovo Edge laptop, the only Windows box available in a Linux IT shop.
vSphere Client v4 and v5 duplicated behavior on the Lenovo Edge. As indicated in the comment to the accepted answer,…

What are the benefits of "enterprise-level" virtualization?
For a company with modest virtualization needs – VirtualBox is currently doing fine at hosting a few light servers – what would some of the benefits be of moving to a more robust platform?
I’m hoping to shortcut my research a bit – to get a short list of the features enterprise-level virtualization has that VBox and its ilk don’t.

Find all virtual machines with ballooned or swapped RAM in VMware cluster?
If I were to look at a vSphere cluster or resource pool and see a certain level of memory ballooning or swapping, how do I identify which VMs are affected? I know what to do with them once I find them :)
In the example below, there are 65 virtual machines in the resource pool. There’s just under 32 Gigabytes of ballooned…

Why doesn’t VMWare DRS automatically migrate VMs when a host is put in maintenance mode?
We have 4 ESXi 5.0 hosts in a VMWare cluster on shared storage (NFS) with DRS and HA on.
We want to perform a memory upgrade on one of the hosts. We put that host in maintenance mode but DRS did not automatically live migrate the VMs.
I’m thinking it has something to do with our settings:
I’m admittedly not…

Do I need VMWare vSphere?
I’m planning use vmware to upgrade some of very aged server instead replace with all new bunch of server. VMWare vSphere sounds great but because of low budget I can’t afford for both licenses and SANs. Without SAN, is vSphere worth the price? As I know without SAN, the VMWare HA, VMontion, FT is unavailable. So, do I need vSphere or only ESXi free version assume that I…

Why don’t people just use rsync to back up vmware guests?
If I am running a modern vmware ESXi system, I can drop in a statically linked rsync binary and rsync files to any destination over SSH.
I’m trying to understand why most (all ?) backup of vmware guests is not done this way.
If the VM is running, you can simply use ‘vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.create’ to create a snapshot and then rsync that…

Symantec Endpoint Protection ( SEP / SEPM ) traffic volume management
My organization has a large deployment of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) (~20k clients) with a single SEPM instance running in an ESX VM. We do have many remote clients designated as Group Update Providers (GUPs) where possible.
What our sysadmins have reported is that the SEP software does not have any native way to…
