Tim's in love with Smile in the same way Brian and Roger are: late nights compositing and early mornings writing, raw fingers turning calloused and lips bitten pink. It's addicting in it's own way, and Brian finds running his hand across Tim's shoulder easy, gaze raking over lyrics even as their fingers intertwine. They don't talk about it, there's just small smiles during sunsets and laughter so close they can smell one another's beer. And it's good, the way they love each other, the way they love Smile.
They've got a good thing going, all things considered. Brian never really imagined a band of three would work the way it does, considering the size and scope that 1984 had, but Tim was a man of many ideas, and with Roger with them, it really did seem like it would work.
And it did, for the most part.
Brian loves a great many things in as many different ways. After they've started recording, Brian wonders if Roger is the same - he seems to fall in love everyday with something new - but no, it's not quite the same. Very quickly does he realize that neither of them love the same way Tim does, though, who falls hard and fast for an idea, localized and unflinching, unapologetic to anything it might steamroll over.
He shouldn't be surprised, but when Tim falls out off love, it near breaks his heart.
Brian tries to understand, tries to not take it personally. It doesn't work, and Roger doesn't help, his own sadness rising out of him like an angry dragon, crackling with anger and hurt in equal measure. Brian's just tired, and withdrawing is a familiar balm. He's hurting Roger, and he's hurting himself, but the energy to care is absent, a gaping hole where his joy used to live.
Tim used to take his hand and tell him he was worth all the stars in the sky. Now, he's gone, and Brian looks down at the ground, and somehow keeps breathing.
