Vocal Technique to improve your singing skill
Vocal Technique to improve your singing skill
It seems that today we are witnessing the recovery of interest in the problems of voice and Vocal Technique education. One discovers, or rather, rediscovers, the importance of vocal function in the personality structure. Discovering one’s own voice is sometimes synonymous with finding one’s own psychological balance.
However, it is at the voice level that the evolution of ideas is more…

“don't do posts like this very often... But today is worth it.
3 years ago when Electra Heart came out, I suffered a vocal injury. I went on to struggle with it for two years. My voice ached continuously, whether I was singing or just talking, to the point where I could barely go for a coffee with a friend. Towards the end of 2013 I felt really desperate about it. I'd been to see some of the best ENT specialists in the world and they couldn't find a solution. (Surgery wasn't one of them).”

What do you think are the most important (or often overlooked) things for self-taught vocal students to focus on?
Great question! (My boyfriend yelled out “tempo,” “musicanship,” and “understanding of music.” Basically, he said, anything other than singing, that singers forget about as they focus on singing. He’s a pianist and accompanist, so he comes across a lot of singers in his job. He thinks it’s a travesty that so many singers can’t read music or have no sense of musicality, and I agree—musicianship will always make you into a better singer.)
I used to be self taught, so I’d say I have a pretty good perspective on this! Here are some big things.
1) Physicality. Singing is a rigorous activity, it’s demanding, and it takes a lot of muscle control, and without a teacher guiding you, that can be hard to really perfect. My teachers guide me a lot on which muscles should be working and which should not, and how to stay safe in my technique. Without somebody watching you, it can be tough. And truly, this goes beyond standing straight, breathing deep, relaxing your shoulders.. This goes into being in complete control of every muscle in your throat and stomach and back and legs and pelvis that is tensing and staying relaxing. Of course, not all teachers go this deep into physicality, but it’s definitely something that my teachers do, and it completely transformed my singing.
2) It’s very helpful to have a third party who is trained listening to your vocals, because when we hear our voices, we hear it through our heads and bodies, so what you hear as you sing is not what an audience is hearing. So having that second pair of ears can catch things that you can’t. My teachers have helped me eliminate so many tiny habits that I wasn’t even cognizant of.
3) Being critical of your bad habits. When you don’t have a teacher to answer to you often feel as if you can get away with things because you think nobody will notice. And perhaps nobody will notice, but if you are really critical about your own bad habits, you will be a better singer for it and people will notice that improvement. So simply not being lazy, and not letting you get away with things is just key.
I hope that helps! I’m sure I could think of some more, but those are some big ones!
Find yourself - Assignment (4)
Key was completely prepared. The good thing about him that he was always in denial, denial that he was nervous for anything and it was that belief that made it true. He strode down the corridor, bag free yet he still managed to part the sea of younger kids. "Move aside." He ordered, voice monotone, uninterested in whether they wanted to or not.
He slid into the voice technique class just on time, and although he had been hoping to borrow jo kwon's his studded leather jacket made up for it.
"I'm ready to perform. I'll go first." He volunteered boldly, stepping up right in front of him.
His lips twitched because he knew this was some kind of game that they were both willing to play, and this was more for amusement rather than delivering any kind of serious message to him.
He started and his eyes barely shifted to him until the second song, only then was the eye contact maintained just as much as his purposeful smirk.
Find Yourself - Assignment (2)
Almost ecstatic that he had found something that he could do he escaped from his dorm room. It was a relatively hot day today compared to all the other days of snow. Key hated wearing unnecessary layers. Once he got to an empty practise room he threw his studded leather jacket down on the floor, watching it slide across the black surface.
He wasn't prepared to stand at the front of the class like a lemon. If he was going to show up and do the assignment then he was going to go all out on it. Being a huge gaga fan and not at least knowing some of the moves would have been an embarrassment.
The irony of the first song was that he didn't actually have any parents.
I've had enough, I'm not a freak I just keep fightin' to stay cool on the streets I've had enough, enough, enough And this is my prayer, I swear I'm as free as my hair I'm a free as my hair I am my hair
When he had heard the song for the first time he had found it stupid, and like everyone else he had skipped onto the more popular songs. But it had grown on him and he could relate to him. Key didn't like to be restricted by something, and the fact that the song was about hair was perfect for him. He bleached his hair on a regular basis and it was never the same shade as the month before. He'd been called a freak when he was younger because of his epilepsy, hence why he tried so hard now not to let it ruin his reputation.
He of course couldn't spend the whole time singing some emotional song that related to his childhood in only a way that he could understand so halfway through the song his finger tapped his iphone and he transformed, smirk instantly growing as he moved into the middle of the floor.
This song had the potential to mean nothing and everything.
Find yourself - Assignment
Part of him wanted nothing more than to make a journey to the staff room and potentially another trip down Jo kwon's pants to try and persuade him not to do the assignment. Not that he had any kind of terror at performing but rather he just couldn't find the right song.
He sat aimlessly scrolling through the playlists on his iphone, the back strategically cracked and ink placed between the marks to create a rainbow effect.
He knew that he had to pick something that meant something to him. He had his big top performers that he was in love with, and two of those were Beyonce and lady gaga, both of which appealed to his inner diva. He knew however that their songs had so much to live up to that he couldn't possibly do them enough justice. He had a good stage presence but it made up for the strength in his vocals that he was lacking.
Beyonce was a definite no no, and he began thinking about what he could portray. There was no point singing something emotionlessly, there had to be a hidden message, a drive to sing it. He was scrolling through gaga's songs before he got an idea, it was being torn between 'Hair' and 'Judas' that he knew they were going to be perfect for him.
A kick in the teeth to his family, and a hello to Jo Kwon himself.
