Emmaline's voice was barely audible through thick tears as she lay on the ground in her bathroom, clutching her stomach, "R-Ryan? Fuck... P-please pick up... I'm s-sorry. I kn-know I said something s-so stupid... I didn't... I shouldn't have s-said it. I w-wasn't thinking... God, p-please pick up... Something's wrong... S-something's wrong in my s-stomach and I'm b-bleeding... I don't kn-know what's wrong..." Choking on her next words, Emmaline spoke just above a whisper, "I'm s-so scared..." After repeating herself a few more times -- a few more 'I'm sorrys' and a few more 'I'm scareds', Emmaline hung up, soon after calling herself an ambulance.
After Frank leaves, Ryan does his best to clean himself up and when he goes to pick up his mobile, there's another alert that says he has a strange message waiting like the one from Abigail. There's less of a struggle getting the phone to play the message and when he places the receiver to his ear to listen the blood drains from Ryan's face and he doesn't know how to breathe. Emmaline's voice breaks too often, hearing the fear in her voice he knows that whatever happened wasn't meant to happen and he has no idea what he's supposed to do now.
Ryan ends the playback abruptly when it tries to repeat itself. He can't listen to it again or he'll break somehow. He just knows it. Was her pain some cosmic payback because he had rebuffed the words she'd said? Was he being punished for having sex with Frank instead of being attentive to her? Panic bubbles beneath his skin and he finally decides to send a text to Emmaline in hopes that whatever her scared talk was of, it was nothing and everything is back to being fine.
He can't accept it being any other way.
