he’s failed again. this isn’t the first time, and he doubts it will be the last, but the knowledge still stings. he’d never once seen billie return empty--handed, having no useful information or anything of the sort, and he thinks this is the third or fourth time he has. he’s glad for this whaler’s mask that conceals his features; he’d hate for daud to see the disappointment written clear across his features.
both arms hang at his sides, just as useless in this moment as he feels. “ i’m sorry, sir, but i haven’t been able to come up with anything. as far as i can tell, the area is empty --- and that’s what worries me. shouldn’t there be guards about? ” thomas takes a step back, hand already rising in preparation for his usual genuflection prior to his departure. “ or-- did you want me to stay? ” with the oddity of the situation, he can see daud maybe wishing for his assistance on this mission.

A stray wolfhound howled. Dust was settling on every surface, twinkling under Dunwall’s pale moonlight, and choked the air like pollen. Daud’s men had to be tucked away on the rooftops. No question. They were lying in wait, looking for any reason to apparate down and sink their blades through his still-beating heart, but they won't. Damn them if they even tried.
He was no stranger to the Whalers and, still, they didn't trust him. That suit him fine.
“I don't suppose you happen to have a spare keg lying around,” he said, gazing up to the rain-dripped rooftops, like he was asking them for a drink. He smiled. "No? Well... It never hurt to ask."
