“not for me, broski.”    argyle tilts his head, as though listening to some cosmic entity dispensing their wisdom directly into his ear, before nodding sagely.  “but i can see why it would be for other people, ‘specially for closed books like yourself.”   a smile, and a playful nudge, to let jughead know he’d meant no harm by that.  brandishing his slice, gaze following a stray piece of bell pepper that flies off, argyle rolls what he wants to say in his mouth for a moment, before swallowing it down alongside a bite of pizza.

“i mean, what’s the worst that could happen, y’know?  you open up, someone takes it bad, you get hurt  ---  but everyone gets hurt.  s’like, an essential human experience.”   pausing, his nose wrinkles, brows furrowing.  “not a fun one, to be sure, my dude.  but all part of life.”   satisfied that he’s sufficiently delivered his insight, argyle returns most of his attention to his pizza, munching happily.  “it’ll all work out how it’s ‘sposed to in the end, brochacho.”

“is that... a joke?”   robin feels sick to her stomach.  her mouth is dry, her palms are sweaty, and she’s pretty sure if she tried to stand up her knees would buckle.  so, instead of doing that, and humiliating herself further, she stares up at kimberly hart, quite possibly the most bonkers hot girl she’s ever met who she wasn’t aware even knew she existed, with something like a terrified awe.  “because if it is---it’s not funny, it’s---that’s so weird---”

the words leave a bitter taste in her mouth, her stomach lurching.  it’s galling, having to pretend like this, but the idea of admitting to her otherness, to outing herself to a stranger  ---  it’s not a risk she’s willing to take.  “i---i mean, unless you didn’t mean---if you just meant as like, friends, or something, that’s---that’s totally different, you know---”   god, robin, shut up.  her mouth snaps closed.  she tries to pretend she can’t feel the way her bottom lip is quivering.  “...sorry, i’m sorry, i’ll---i’m gonna go.”

“what?  me?  nooooo, never!”   of course, the way eddie immediately hides his wild grin behind his hair belies his faux scandalised tone, but something tells him simon wouldn’t have bought that little innocent act anyway.  a giggle fights its way free from between clenched teeth, before he relents and allows himself a half-choked cackle.  “okay, okaaay, i promise this one isn’t illegal.”  o’donnell might still call the cops on him, but it’s not technically illegal.

one thing about small towns, it’s easy to find out where your teachers live.  it’s even easier if the general student body agrees that the teacher in question is a raging bitch on wheels.  even during the short amount of time he’s been posted across the street, eddie’s seen o’donnell chase off three separate groups of hawkins high students taking advantage of the halloween chaos to egg her house.  of course, he isn’t planning anything as lowbrow as that  ---  well.  a bucket of rubber spiders rigged to empty itself on her head when she opens her front door isn’t exactly sophisticated, but it’ll do.  “look, man, all you gotta do is go up there, ring the bell, and then run like hell.”

“i swear i just wanted to look at it.”   which is why kim’s just busted him red-handed holding her bow.  obviously.  because he’d just wanted to look at it.  dustin flashes what he hopes is a winning smile in the older girl’s direction, showing off his pearls, before he focuses intently on replacing the bow as carefully as he can, tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth in concentration.

“i’ve never seen one like it  ---  i mean, all my experience with bows is limited to the shitty ones they had at camp know where and the ones on the pages of my d&d manuals, but,”   here, he pauses, hops on the spot a few times, a grin splitting his face,  “this one is very cool and i am prepared to get on my knees and beg you to teach me to use it.  shame is like, a foreign concept for me.”   dustin likes to think how earnest he is happens to be one of his finer qualities.

“wha  ---  oh, shit, sorry.”

it probably doesn’t bode well for his future as a guardian  ---  or whatever the moroi equivalent would be  ---  that he hadn’t heard rose approach.  even with his music blaring in his ears, his hearing should be good enough to have picked up her footfalls.  it’s a pointless endeavour, because duh, she’s already seen it, but steve still attempts to hide the baseball bat he’s been practising his swings with behind his back, trying for his signature winning smile.  the fact that he has to pause to flick his sweat-soaked fringe out of his eyes probably dampens the charm, slightly.

“...you’re not gonna buy it if i tell you i’m just trying to get some extra practise time in, are you?”  considering it’s not baseball season, it wouldn’t be his best excuse for why he’s drenched in sweat in the middle of the day, or why he’s got a bunch of roughly cobbled-together training dummies set up.  “look  ---  can you just... not mention this to anyone?”   the sunlight, which hadn’t exactly been comfortable for him from the start, is beginning to feel less like tiny pinpricks and more like shallow cuts on his skin.  “or if you’re gonna chew me out can we go inside first?”

“you scared the shit out of me, man!  and you owe me a new blender!”   heart racing, eddie slumps against the cabinets behind him, clutching at his shirt with one hand while he runs the other down his face.  wayne’s gonna lose his shit when he finds out eddie had hurled one of their appliances at what he’d thought was a would-be intruder, only to discover simon had let himself into the trailer while eddie had been at work.  “holy shit.”  

leaving the fallen blender where it lies in pieces, eddie turns to rifle through the cabinet tucked into the corner of the kitchen, pulling out a coffee can he can’t remember ever being filled with coffee.  fishing the crumpled bills that pass for his weekly wages out of his pocket, eddie stuffs them into the rainy day fund, knowing he’ll be pulling them right back out later when he replaces the blender.  “what are you even doing here, si?  not that you’re not welcome anytime, man, but don’t just fuckin’ lurk in the dark.  turn on a light.  shit.”
