I'm curious: why didn't Volewhisker change his name to something reflecting his leg? And why did Tornear change his name? That doesn't sound overly distinguishing or life-threatening, and it's not like Tigerclaw got renamed to Scarrednose or similar.
Volewhisker just didn't feel like changing his name, and Tornear suffered some damage to his hearing. Those claws went deep, even if his outward ear is fine. He asked for his name to be changed, and the Clan was ambivalent about it. Some of them aren't so sure he should've gotten a name change at all, but when you have to call twice and louder to get his attention, maybe he earned it.
Volewhisker has a mauled leg, was he viable for a name change with that injury? If so imma guess that he didn’t want to be known as… Mangledleg? Or one of the other options possible.
Correct! He declined a name-change when he was offered it.
A gray, smoked ticked tabby tom with yellow eyes. Volewhisker is a gentle if distant tom whose never been all that sociable. He’s not unfriendly, he’s just very introverted and social situations intimidate him. He left Brindleface to do most of the interacting with others while he acted at her muscle. Many cats assumed he was stupid or unintelligent- all brawn and no brains.
Volewhisker didn’t do much to dissuade this train of thought, he found that answering in short sentences and asking surface level questions encouraged this misconception.
Willowpelt was the first cat to see through his mask but rather than coax him out of it, she learned to work with it. They became such good friends that when Willowpelt approached him asking to sire kits for her, he agreed. Initially he’d agreed to have no fatherly relationship with the kits- they’d be Willowpelt’s through and through and it’d be up to her to tell them that he sired them if they wanted.
Then disaster struck and most of the litter was killed off in an aggressive burst of greencough one moon after they were born. Volewhisker bonded with their remaining kit as best as he could, choosing to assist Willowpelt in raising Graykit. While he’s happy with what they have, if she wanted him to sire another litter he’d do it.
Volewhisker is incredibly proud of his son and his mate in Fireheart - he thinks Graystripe made a good choice. He was very frightened when Silverstream’s kitting came about and hovered near the nursery almost as much as he did when Willowpelt was kitting - their history of labor problems and kit tragedy ate away at him. As frightened as he was, both the kits and Silverstream came out alright and Volewhisker praises Sweetsoul’s mercy every day that he remembers it.
