Volvo’s first production collaboration with Bertone was the 264TE limo, but it was soon followed by a genuine halo car, the 262C, meant to add some luster to Volvo’s 260 series. Inspired by the Lincoln MkIV, the 262C was a chop-top pimpmobile fit for a king - a proper personal/luxury car with real carrozzeria bona fides. But although Bertone built the car, it had been styled in-house by Jan Wilsgaard. In 1981, with the new 700 series nearing production, Volvo went back to Bertone for a successor, but this time things would be different. - As before, Wilsgaard proposed a chopped formal-roof coupe, but Nuccio Bertone was not a fan and began work on his own proposal. Not everyone was keen on the 262C’s looks. Bertone created a much sleeker looking design that bore some resemblance to the Maserati BiTurbo, but crisper and more delicate. Wilgaard’s second proposal was closer to Bertone’s ideas and ended up informing the greenhouse, but much of Bertone’s design made it to production. The new coupe perfectly reflected the 700 shape, but lower and sleeker. It shared no panels with the regular 700s, by then on the market in 1982. - About 80% of the car was shipped to the expanded Grugliasco factory from Sweden, and Bertone built the rest. The car debuted at Geneva in March, 1985 and went on sale in Italy in 1986 (with 2.4 TD power), reaching other markets a year later with gas engines. These semi-bespoke cars were, unsurprisingly, the most expensive #Volvos ever when new, priced higher than a BMW 5-series, a cool $34,785 base in 1987. - They were not as fast as BMW’s E24s, but they were fairly quick for a 3,400 lb. 1980s coupe with family car mechanicals. Under the hood lurked the B280F V6 and a pair of #Volvo #Turbo fours, though some European markets had a few other choices. 8,518 780s were built until production ended in 1991, with a large majority of the coming to North America (5,695), all of these with 4-speed Autos. Like the other 700-series Volvos, they were capable of huge mileages and generally trouble free, but the 780 did everything with style. - By 1991 demand was fading and the early 90s recession killed it.
