Not all songs need meaningful lyrics.

Sometimes songs need meaningful music, with lyrics or vocals to accompany it.

Jónsi taught me that. His band Sigur Rós would use what is called Vónlenska, or 'Hopelandic'. To an English or non-Icelandic speaker, you'd assume that he must be speaking in his native language, but you'd guess wrong. Hopelandic is actually a bunch of gibberish meant to support the sound of the music. It mimics the sound of Icelandic words, but doesn't really mean anything. Because of this, it gives the listeners an ethereal listening experience in which they can determine what the songs mean for themselves, rather than seeking out meaning from the song writer.

The grin on his lips couldn’t possibly be missed as he glanced up from one of the countless books in front of him to search Robin’s gaze. Of course he didn’t actually believe that, and, honestly, the more he thought about it? The less appealing it sounded.

Yeah, no, that had been a bad idea - if it was an ability that had never been seen before his family had first started existing? There wouldn’t be much, or any, research at all, and he wouldn’t ever figure out what the hell he was supposed to do with any of this. 

“Y’know what? I take it back. We’re not that special. There’s probably some ... ancient cause, some cool mythology linked to it. We’ll just have to find it.”

In 2002, Sigur Rós highly anticipated follow-up album ( ) was released. Upon release all tracks on the album were untitled, though the band later published song names on their website. All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in Vonlenska, also known as Hopelandic, a language without semantic meaning, which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language. It has also been said that the listener is supposed to interpret their own meanings of the lyrics which can then be written in the blank pages in the album booklet.

        it creeps in slowly, wrapping around her so softly that she barely even feels it coming until it’s too late to fight — the worst kind of enemy, when she relies on being quicker than everyone else. but maybe, for the first time in a long time ( she knows how long, but she doesn’t want to think it; not when she’s here, with these people she trusts, mostly ) bea can let sleep win. maybe, for the first time in a long time, she doesn’t have to fight it with everything that she has, and take her victory in darting awake at the slightest noise from somebody else.

       it’ll take some time — a lot of time — before she can sleep deeply. but she’ll settle for sleeping with them right here. it’s good, it’s more than she’s had in a long time.

        it’s so easy, somehow, to just lean a little more, to let her head rest on darcel’s shoulder; bea doesn’t think about it, she doesn’t let her mind run away with her, and it’s…nice, she thinks. comfortable, maybe; her skin doesn’t crawl, she doesn’t want to get to the farthest room from here.

        i could fall asleep here.

        no. no, no, absolutely not.

        maybe there’s danger, alarm bells ringing so loudly they’re deafening — and maybe they’re screaming louder than usual, because this is urgent, this is not something that can be passed off as normal in her life — but this is not okay.

        (even if she didn’t want to lash out, just to get free of what feels like a binding, even if she didn’t want to scrub at every point of contact, it’s gotta be some kind of fact; someone carrying another person, because bea’s not a damn toddler, is gonna run slower than if they were running on their own.

        and bea is fast. she has to be.)

        so she wriggles, and she kicks, and sure, she gets that darcel’s trying to help her, trying to keep her safe — she’s still not used to people trying to keep her safe — but maybe it’d be nice to be treated like a person who managed to survive before there was anyone around big enough to pick her up. give her some credit. (she’s uncomfortable, and scared, and it makes her venomous.)

        with her feet back on the ground, bea shoots darcel with a headshot of a look, don’t touch me and i’m not a baby all at once, and then she’s off, running as fast as she can, even when her lungs begin to burn.
