        These days, Apollo’s terms were very clear. If they met, it would be on neutral ground, out in the open, at high noon. And only on days with broad, blue horizons untouched by cloud cover. Only then did the Sun King come down from the skies for a meeting with Midnighter.

        It didn’t used to be like this. They used to be Happy. But somewhere in between raising the spirit of the next Century and fighting for a Finer World, something changed. Jenny’s altruism had twisted into a socio-political weapon, cold and inhumane. The Engineer had infected them all with a virus that could detect subversive thought. And Midnighter... 

        The Midnighter didn’t change, didn’t stop being who he was. No... Instead, he went back to doing exactly what Henry Bendix had bred them to do. And in the process, he shut Apollo out. 

         Absolute Authority. Sure. By the time the Sun King realized the direction they were headed, it was too late. He knew he couldn’t fight this team, fight M, and win. So Apollo had left, gone to ground like the early days. Except this time, the safest place was in the sky. 

       The only thing that’d kept him alive this long was the fact that Midnigther refused to search for him. Apollo knew that. He knew that if Mid really wanted him found, captured, locked into one of those cells in his prison.... he’d be there.

       But that didn’t mean the Sun King could trust him. So... high noon, cloudless day, and even then, Apollo kept his distance. He hovered well outside of Midnighter’s reach, nearly a hundred feet above where his husband stood on the ground, and eyed the other man warily. 

       “.....I got your message. What do you want, Midnighter?”
