October 13th, 2018
Chicago Women’s “March to the Polls” rally kicked off on a crisp and cool autumn morning. Attendance seemed a bit off from expectations, especially compared the two woman’s marches held in January 2017 and January 2018. But by the time actual marching started, the noisy crowd rolling through the Loop seemed to me to be both huge and extremely spirited.
The infamous “baby Trump” balloon was present on Columbus Drive before the march, but it was kept on a short tether and low to the ground. Despite my liberal politics, I find the caricature blimp offensive, so I was happy it didn’t go on the actual march. To my eye, images of a public demonstration should focus on the passion of the participants and the slogans on the signs they’re carrying. A massive cartoon balloon of the current president, no matter how amusing some people may find it, would be a shiny orange object distracting from the most important message of the gathered crowd, “Get out to the polls and vote!”
