Studying the number of shots needed for a clean panorama

Examined this morning’s woodland photo shoot.  (A notably complex panorama due to overhead trees, leaves and a slight breeze.)

Removed the +3 & -3 exposures.  

Then made folders based on 10° degree increments; 10°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 60°, and 90°.

Made panoramas based on these 6 groups. 

The results: stitching errors appear in the apex of 4 to 6 shot panoramas.  Once there are 9 or more shots these errors vanish. 

Comparing the 9, 12, 18, and 36 shot panoramas in Photoshop only difference is the amount of stitching distortion.   The more photos the less stitching distortion.

Final notes

Without the need for bracketed exposures (using post processing) and using a wired camera remote switch the process is much faster than before.

36 shots could be taken in 41 seconds.  And 9 shots in as little as 10 seconds.

Five minutes to process 36 shots into a 16-bit panorama, ten minutes to convert the 16-bit panorama to a 32-bit HDRi panorama.
