A Note RE: Ship Names

It’s come to my attention that some people in VRAINS fandom are disappointed enough in some of the confirmed ship names to insist they’re going to use others that lost the vote (or were never even up to vote) instead.

I understand being disappointed with ship names. I definitely have ships that I wish had better names. This is why vrship requires a ship to get more than 50% of the vote to be confirmed; while no -shipping name is ever going to please everyone, because everyone has different tastes, it at least means that the name is hopefully preferred by the majority of the fandom.

I understand the disappointment. But when you react to this by insisting on using another name anyway, you do two things: you split up the content, making it harder for shippers to find, and you claim multiple names for one ship that could have gone to others (and create potential clashes where two ships are trying to use the same name, too).

If people are going to do this, there is no point having a shipping list. There is no point attempting to catalogue ship names and please as much of the fandom as possible if some of you would rather just use several different names for a ship, with no rhyme or reason or cohesion.

And if there’s no point in having a shipping list, I’m certainly not going to continue running one for the good of my health.

So basically: if you guys want vrship to continue, then make that clear to the people who are undermining what I’m doing here. And if the people who’d rather just use whichever name they prefer and have the ship names basically be a free-for-all are the majority, then make that clear to me so that I can leave you guys to it instead of trying to herd cats here.

I’ll probably put up a poll in the next couple days about this, so look out for that.

Shutting Down

While the running poll results as they stand are still well within the ‘continuing to run’ threshold, I’ve come to the decision that I can’t run vrship anymore. At this point, what I’m getting out of running it doesn’t compare to what it’s taking out of me in terms of energy and stress, so for my own sake I’m stepping down.

To those of you who’ve supported vrship and brought your comments to me, whether support or criticism: I’m pretty sure you guys are the majority, and for that I want to thank you. I’m sorry for dropping vrship like this.

To the group of you who’ve been very vocal about criticisms without actually bringing them to me: The majority of them are moot at this point, so I’m only going to address one: yes, I agree that the ask about CyverseDragonshipping would have been better addressed in a separate post than answered directly. The user in question had previously ignored submission rules and sent time-wasting joke asks prior to their attitude there, and I’ll admit that as a result I was annoyed and just responded directly without thinking that decision through.

To anyone who plans to take up the reins: Let me know what url you’ll be using, and I’ll promo it.

Following the previous post, I’ve set up a poll regarding whether people will use whichever -shipping name they prefer if they dislike the one that wins. 

This will decide the future of this shipping list: if more than 20 people or more than 35% of the voters vote that yes, they would do that, then I’ll shut vrship down. With the typical number of votes that the ship name polls get, results like that would indicate to me that there are too many people undermining the purpose of this blog for running it to be worth my while.

ETA: Because it might not have been clear from the original, the 20 people/35% of the vote are not equivalent numbers. What I meant by those numbers was that if the vote reaches either of those, I’ll shut vrship down. If it gets enough votes, I’ll potentially ignore the ‘20 people’ part and look just at the percentage.

I’d like to clarify something, sparked by the previous ask:

I will not respond privately to any asks sent to vrship. I intend to keep everything as transparent as possible, which means keeping my communications as public as possible. As a result, asks will be answered publicly or not at all.

This is particularly true when dealing with comments about how vrship is being run/how things are named, as my responses to those in particular are things I feel that everyone should be able to see so that everyone is on the same page about how this blog and the running of it work. If your ask is about those things, particularly if you have criticism of how vrship is running, it will be answered.

If you don’t wish to have your name attached to something, anonymous asks are enabled. If you accidentally sent something un-anon that you wanted anonymous, then send a message letting me know that before I publish a response and I’ll cap the ask and blank out your name/icon, rather than responding directly.

Because of how many names have been suggested, I’m pretty sure that not only is no Aoi x Yuusaku suggestion going to hit the 50% threshold for naming, but it’s also potentially going to be difficult to narrow it down for the inevitable second mini-vote.

 So what I’m planning to try is this:

Instead of just the standard single ‘what should it be called’ question, I’m going to put in separate questions for your first preference, second preference, etc. I’m thinking up to fourth preference in this case!

Each vote will get the suggestion a certain number of points (e.g. four points for first preference, three points for second preference, etc). At the end of the week, those will be tallied up. I’m hoping that those point counts will give a clearer ‘top 2-4′ for a mini-vote.

Hopefully doing it this way will work out, and if so I’ll keep on using it for ships with lots of suggestions!

Previously my policy has been that if a ship is suggested without any fanwork apparent in the smushname tags, I’ll hold the ask until there is content.

This is changing from now on (as a note, though, this won’t affect the asks I’m already saving for this reason).

Before you send an ask suggesting a name for a ship that doesn’t already have suggestions, you need to check the tags to ensure that there actually is content and that the ship is actually eligible to name. Preferably, your ask should also note which tag that content is currently in, so that I can mark that down and hopefully keep the smushname tags contained/orderly as well.

In future, if you send a suggestion for a ship without previous suggestions and I can’t find any content in the tags, your ask will be deleted without commentary.

Ships become eligible to name once they have content. If the ship doesn’t have content - and especially when you admit in the ask that you haven’t actually checked beforehand - it is not eligible for naming, so please do not attempt.

With the VRAINS air date only a week away now, I wanted to remind everyone that this blog exists!

The exact process of how submissions will work and what kind of timeframe/voting method vrship will have for name confirmation isn’t totally settled yet, which is where you guys come in - what kind of things do you have in mind for it? What kind of things do you think have and haven’t worked for the previous shiplists? What kind of rules do you want there to be about who can and can’t name ships, or what those names can be? What kind of timeframe do you think there should be between names being suggested and names being confirmed?

I’ll be setting up a poll in the next few days to start getting definite answers on how the fandom wants the shiplist run, but in the meantime please do hit up the askbox to let me know your thoughts!

Pre-series Poll Results

Now that the first ep has aired (and I hope everyone else that saw it already enjoyed it as much as I did!) I also have the results for the poll from last post, about how vrship is going to work:

Shipname suggestions will not be accepted until there’s fan content for the ship (which should preferably be posted in a smushname tag, eg #aoiyuu or #kusayuu)

After the first suggestion has been accepted for a ship, the names for it will pend for one week before being voted on, to allow for more suggestions.

Note: This won’t apply until after three episodes have aired, since we won’t be confirming any names before then.

Shipname votes will start on either Friday or Saturday; this is up for a second vote, ending next Wednesday (05/17/17).

Shipname votes will last for one week.

To become official, winning shipnames need at least 50% of the vote.

Note: In the interests of transparency, this vote actually came out pretty tied between 40%/60%; this seems like the best compromise to me, but it can be put up for another vote instead if people would prefer.

If no name passes this, a shorter vote will be run with the top 2-3 options. My plan so far is that that vote would start on Friday/Saturday when the regular poll ends and last until Monday.
