Dar couldn’t bring himself to call the deceased a friend, not on good conscience, but his heart sank at the sight of Will’s lifeless form. Worse still to think that Will had chosen to go into this himself.He hadn’t been ready. Dar thought he’d prepared himself for this outcome, but the weight was unexpected. So heavy, this soul that he’d used and abused. That he’d allowed on the this mission, that he’d allowed to die. Dar didn’t deserve to feel hurt by Will’s passing; his hands were already bloody. He knelt near the body, cold and unyielding under his hand. The corpse lay prone on the forest floor, neck broken and eyes closed as if the victim had anticipated that final blow. Of course Will had known. He’d probably looked straight into to his killer’s eyes and defied him before accepting the inevitable.And while his hands still ran red, he could at least make it even.Dar shuffled among the dead leaves and pressed earth until he found a print. Clear as day, it lead off into the heart of the forest. A trail surely left for him alone. That suited him just fine. Hell, it would make the hunt easier.As he rose from the ground, he looked back at Will’s body. The last innocent life he’d let Ben to take. Their names rang through his mind, building on the rage from years past. He set off on Ben’s trail. Maybe this time, they’d put each other down.
