“You don’t sound okay. Here, sit.”

As if It would get him to follow, she sat down, patting the floor gently.

“I won’t dig in your thoughts, but even if I couldn’t hear them, I’d know you’re hurting. At least let me help, okay?”

He sighed in defeat, slowly moving to sit down on the floor as well. It was for the best anyway- his head was spinning so much it was getting hard to see at all. Tieria closed his eyes once he was seated, squeezing them shut and willing the room to stop spinning.

“... Fine.”

Ambrose pondered the question for a long moment before looking at him, her face scrunched up in thought.

She had never studied language, but found she never failed to understand them- part of her brain rationalized it as a built-in translation chip…

And the other part, the part still struggling with the concept of being something other than human, was unfortunately the part that had better reaction speed.

“What the fuck?” She murmured quietly, but with feeling.

“There’s no need for you to start saying foul things, now.” Tieria frowned, though he echoed the sentiment mentally. “I suppose the best way to test would be for you to listen to something in a foreign language that I cannot hear. Though our mental link may make that difficult.”

He crossed his arms and stared at the computer, then at Ambrose, then back at the computer, then back at Ambrose.

“You can understand them?”

Tieria quirked a brow- thanks to Veda’s language processors he could understand them, but he wasn’t aware the other Innovade could understand them as well.

“Did you learn the language yourself, or do you think something else is at play?”

Of course, he was dodging the question of why he was watching anime in the first place.

“I’m fine,” Tieria insisted- if she didn’t feel it, then he didn’t need to show his pain. Though his hands shook on the guardrail, and his voice shook just as much- if Ambrose didn’t show any signs of being affected, Tieria couldn’t either.

“I-I’m fine.” He repeated the words again- more for his own benefit than hers.

2. Yelling at an inanimate object for not functioning properly

“Damn you! Work!”

Tieria was almost ready to throw his comm device across the room. It had gotten stuck on an image- at least it was a rather nice one of an old painting- but it was still stuck. And no matter what he did, it wouldn’t budge.

“Fool of a thing! Do you think I find this amusing? Do you?!”

And then there was the sound of a door opening and Ambrose’s thoughts- and voice- echoed toward him.

He froze, turning slowly, cheeks ablaze as he slowly put the comm device down.

“Hey, you settling in alright?”

Artemis slowly walked into the room where Ambrose was residing- she hated the idea of the other being kept in a room, even if that was what was really going on for now.

“I know you’ve just been through a ton, but... If you need someone to talk to...”

It’s impolite to eavesdrop, Ambrose Albright.

Tieria frowned- so what if she wasn’t eavesdropping in the traditional sense? He could still feel the other Innovade’s thoughts at the edge of his mind.

He hadn’t figured out just how she could hear his thoughts on occasion. Were their genetic codes just that close? Or was that just her talent, listening in on others?

Either way, Tieria wasn’t exactly happy about it.
