It was so easy to get turned around in these woods. She’d never had a good sense of direction. Even in her tiny little hometown, sometimes she’d get turned around and not know where to go without a little direction. Because of this, she wasn’t a very exploratory kid. She stuck with what she was used to. What was familiar and easily manipulated. The Old Growth Forest was none of those things, and she was learning that the hard way.
After what felt like forever, she finally found her way back toward civilization, having not accomplished anything she’d set out to do on this little impromptu hiking trip she’d woefully underprepared for. She was ready to head back for her car and go home empty handed, but then she spotted a familiar face.
“Will!” she called after the park ranger. She’d met him once before about a week ago while she was on a run. He was cute and she’d chatted him up, but hadn’t gotten far. Seeing him suddenly gave her new hope for what she was out here to do. She jogged up after him, smiling brightly in his direction.
“Hey there, darlin’. Fancy meetin’ you here.” She placed a hand on his harm, giving it a little playful squeeze. “I been mighty lost in this here forest lookin’ for a real pretty place to take pictures. I reckon you know what’s worth seein’ ‘round here tho, huh?”
