Who are your top 5 Jjk faves and why?
Hello thank you for asking I rambled so much.
Yuta: I was always going to find Yuta interesting because his horrible playground marriage is the exact kind of weird heterosexuality I like in my fiction, but I think what really made him my #1 in jjk was his complete shock at learning he cursed Rika even though he himself suggested that this might have been what happened...the ways Yuta tries to erase himself and not-know the things he knows. And then of course I think it’s really great the way 0 gets completely recontextualized by JJK proper. Yuta’s moment of self-realization being refigured as an assimilation, (prefiguring his other attempts at assimilation?) is really good, and tragic! Also I just find him very funny. He looks like a haunted doll. I really like how he is voice-acted. Also also, I like his technique and I like Rika! Rika is not really treated as a character in JJK (though the series would be better if she was) so the ways she is interesting mostly end up tying back to Yuta.
Maki: Big fan of her anger and her casual cruelty toward her sister. She’s very frustrated and very frustrating. I tend to think of Maki as one of the more pragmatic characters in JJK, and her care comes across as both pragmatic and condescending in ways I find really interesting to chew on as a viewer. Maki is maybe not pushing for acceptance so much as dominance, and this causes her to victim blame people like her sister and Yuta, but especially for Mai she views her potential dominance as a route to care. I also think Maki is consistently portrayed as one of the kids who best understands her position in jjk, both as a strategist and in terms of her understanding of the clan dynamics and politics that surround her. I like that these things do not make her respectful or easy to get along with. I think that she is funny, and I like when she is mean. Yay Maki.
Mai: this is an obvious season 3 bias, but that’s how it goes. Mai is such a minor character but she’s so well-utilized. I think introducing a sister for Maki could feel very random, but as the disparity in how the sisters think of each other and how much they consider each other becomes clearer it really really works. Mai resents Maki for leaving her behind and not thinking of her, and the impression you as a viewer get is that, for all Maki cares for her sister, she spends very little time trying to understand her, something Mai reacts to by withholding knowledge—of her crushes, of her technique, of what being twins means—and resentfully refusing to be drawn in to development of strength both because of the ways she is constantly pressured and the way maki feeds that pressure through their twin connection. I think I primarily like Mai because she’s so resentful and bitter.
Gojo: is simply and unfortunately the best character in jjk. He is so well-pieced together as a character and as a thing for the world of the series to orbit around. I feel like Gojo as a character tells you almost everything you need to know about Jujutsu society, its concerns and how it operates, not just by his opposition to certain facets of it but because of the ways his own perspective is also embedded within it. I don’t have much to say about him in isolation because of this; to an extent talking about Gojo necessitates talking about JJK more broadly.
Last slot could go to a lot of different people but I think I will give it to Megumi. I think the positions he occupies within the Jujutsu world are absolutely wild, and I like his resentment toward and complete lack of engagement with his family. Like he totally thinks of Maki as his senior in school before he thinks of her as his cousin or aunt or whatever she actually is. I think Megumi, with his complete lack of idealism except where it can be projected onto his absent sister (or yuji), is a really fun character to play off Yuji. Big fan of the colluding entanglements created between him, Nobara, and Yuji. If only Nobara existed in season 3.
for the sketch requests!! a rachel and scott moment if you are so inclined
i AM so inclined. i do think that rachel normally shaves her own head, but i also think she's not going to say no if scott offers to help.
