Today I Learned: how to make nested data structures
I am able to create multiple questions/answers all in one go! I had to set up a nested data structure in combination with the use of a QuestionFormStore but the thing finally works!
In other news, we had our seventh AND last assessment today! The assessment was on CSS - I did well!
Full steam ahead on this capstone!
Oh, and we also learned about Omni-auth today. NBD. Cheers.
App Academy: Week 9, Day 1
Today was our final day before peer reviews on our capstone projects, so I focused on fleshing-out the last parts of the minimally viable product for my project. Thus, today I added a search bar to the application navbar so that users can search for each other, and added the ability for users to send friend requests to each other and to accept those requests (in which case the users become friends) or to ignore them. Also, I made it so that the Newsfeed view shows the user where the posts in her feed were originally posted to.
During lecture today, we also learned how to use Omniauth to authenticate users through the authentication APIs of other websites, such as Facebook or Google. In the case that it's the user's first login, we also learned how to create a new entry in the users table for her using the params returned by the authentication request to the third-party API.
Tomorrow, my plan is to start implementing notifications, which will likely take me until the end of Wednesday to finish. Then, on Thursday, I'm going to implement a real-time instant-messaging system using Pusher, which I can hopefully carry-over to notifications and friend requests to make them real-time as well.
Single Page Auth
Is difficult
I made search - w9d1
It was the coolest, also I learned a lot about ActiveRecord, and the Google Maps api.

Today I began to work on updating a few of my views to properly show user's information (followers, feeds, playlists) and hoped to finish around lunch to get started on file uploads but next thing I knew it was the end of the day. That being said I did go back and revamp a lot of my code and got the UI a lot smoother but I definitely got a good lesson in properly budgeting my time. It is really easy to get side tracked while working on CSS and UI since it never feels like it is over but tomorrow I will set aside the full day to complete file uploads and then Wednesday to complete search-ability do hopefully be done with all my features with two days to work on CSS and final touches.
Encouragement and Acknowledgement
I have missed running. I haven't run since Thursday. For whatever reason, I think I've been delaying starting the last week of C25K. I can't believe that I'm nearly done!
Yesterday I went on a 3 mile walk with DA (my neighbor). While we were out, we walked past a house just down the street from ours and the owners two little white dogs came running out. We had DA's dog Bear with us. The owner came out to retrieve the dogs and while she was gathering them up, she commented to me that I was doing really well and to keep it up.
It's amazing how just someone, a complete stranger, encouraging me make such a huge difference. My husband has been 100% supportive and encouraging from day one of this process, and that fuels me every day. But when someone that I don't have regular contact with, that I honestly don't ever speak to except to say hello once in a while, says that they've noticed what I'm doing and to keep it up, it's a game changer for me.
I realize that perhaps I'm not just doing this for myself. Yes, ultimately it is for me, but when I know that other people are watching, and paying attention, it makes me see that, I can't quit. There's no way that I can stop what I'm doing.
Tonight's run was a challenge. I went running after it got dark which all in all is not an issue. What was an issue, however, was the humidity. It was so humid that there were a few times that it just became difficult to breathe. However, I pushed through it, and 30 minutes later, W9D1 was in the bag.
I'm reminded of a quote that Pat Teske said "Relish the bad training runs. Without them, it's difficult to recognize, much less appreciate, the good ones."
