It's Western Australia Day, and I observe the 'celebration' with the same see-saw of pride and disappointment as I do Australia Day.

I tried to write about it here, about my view on modern Australian history, about how I'm not excluded from responsibility or shame just because I don't know my family's history, at least from my own perspective, but it got so negative, and I got disheartened. I love the land on which I live, but I can smell the blood that has soaked into it.

So, instead, I will continue to live my life as compassionate and as understanding towards others as I'm able. It's not going to change the past or the world, but I hope it can be comfort enough to those I encounter during my time here.

To that end, this is Rumble. He's a blowfly. You can apply whatever symbolism you want to that. I think it's important that even my 'ugly' toys are welcome in my safe space.

WA Day Holiday 6 June 2015: 2100 Today was a State Holiday - Western Australia Day. It used to be called Foundation Day but as that is European-settlement specific, it was changed a couple of years back. The Husband and I went for a 37.5km ride up to Kings Park, where it started to rain. BUT I got a Strava PR on the 'TSR Hill of Shit' segment (obviously named by a guy who was struggling like a baby), which is a short sharp climb leading up to Kings Park. I also equalled my best time on the Lemons segment - just petered out at the finish. The weather is cold with rain forecast so tomorrow's day off might be one for the heater and my book.

Shark Weather

It is the Western Australia Day holiday. Right now it is grey and cold - what we call ‘shark weather’. Another fatal shark attack yesterday brought the death tally up to two people in one week.

A woman diving at Mindarie reef was taken by a great white reportedly bigger than the 5.3m boat that came to retrieve her. Yesterday the surf swell was perfect but no-one was surfing because of shark sightings and the death of a surfer who succumbed to his injuries after having a leg taken days earlier.

Shark attacks are escalating because great whites are a protected species and their numbers are growing exponentially at the same time as their food sources are shrinking. If there are no seals or tuna they are going to come in and grab humans.

Only 16-20 years ago, my husband and I would take our toddlers in their floaties over the surf break to the safe flat water beyond, where we’d bob about looking at fish and stingrays. That would be unimaginable now. Things have changed that quickly.

The community is divided about shark culling. Some say it’s their environment, stay out if it. Others argue that we have a right to enjoy the ocean and if we want a viable tourism industry we need to cull sharks whose numbers are growing every year.

I swam in the ocean last summer but I can’t feel relaxed doing it any more. Jaws is real.

Yesterday was Western Australia Day, and I did nothing but play Splatoon. Patriotism at its finest.

G'Day from WA!

Today is the first day of Winter, so I can no longer say, “Winter is coming”, in ominous tones. It is also the Western Australia Day public holiday and the Government has entreated us to relax and have fun all the long weekend. I think I have complied nicely! 😎

The Husb caught a plane to Korea for work last night, which gave me carte blanche to read until 1.00am, 😳 so I had another major sleep-in this morning.

There are festivities in the city which I may or may not rouse myself to attend with clubathletica and my nephew, but a lot of activities appear to be aimed at young children. Personally, I would get my face painted but you know, I suspect some of those mums would not be happy waiting in line with their littlies while a ‘mature’ woman indulged her inner child. 👧 Still, there will be food…

Holiday or not, I must get some logs done now that my PC has been vacated by the stats student. And some form of physical activity will take place. 💪

PS I can feel my triceps from yesterday's weights session. 😄
