Today, Paul and I went on quite the adventure in Friesland, Netherlands. It’s called Wadlopen or Mudwalking. We started at noon and walked from Holwerd across the marshes and water to the island of Ameland. The terrain was a constant surprise. It ranged from flat mud, to soft mud up to my shins, to water up to my navel, and everything in between. It took over three hours to walk to the island and my poor legs were exhausted by the time we got there. Once we reached land we had another 30 minute walk over the hill to the beach on the other side where a tractor was waiting to take along the beach to a town called Buren. We hosed off and changed into dry close before we took the bus from there out to Nes to catch the ferry. By then it was nearly 6pm and I was starving. Fortunately the ferry had food for sale. So we ate our dinner while we enjoyed the 30 minute ferry ride back to where it all started. It was quite the unexpected adventure and I day I’ll never forget.
