i think an underappreciated aspect of the white knight trope is that /by its nature/ the act of the saving the princess cannot come with permission. the princess trapped by nefarious forces can never ask someone directly to save her, lest she be punished by the forces, so the white knight has no choice but to steal her away. without consent or hope of reward the knight throws themselves to the dragon to slay it, out of only their desire to see the princess saved. it is that act that proves the knight to be true, and that selfless love that steals the heart of the princess as well.
