something something. the villains who get villain->hero’d are villains whose goals fundamentally are about meeting basic emotional needs (freedom, safety, purpose, meaning); the ones who don’t are villains whose goals are fundamentally about hurting or controlling other people as the end itself (ideological commitment to cruelty, abusive obsession, fixation on maintaining loyalty and absolute authority). for most of the remaining villains this is open and shut. (the cat, neo, raven, cinder, salem, and dark are in the first category; light is in the second) but for mercury and tyrian it’s been left, i think deliberately, unclear. tyrian’s religiosity notionally points to the first category, his sadism to the second; mercury insists that he doesn’t want anything, he’s just following the path given to him, even as it’s clear that he’s hemorrhaging emotionally. and now it’s just Those Two together in vacuo. balanced on the knife’s edge and playing off the reflections they are of each other. could fall either way.
I think it’s more of a giant french horn?
