A coal tip in Port Harcourt for loading ships with coal (postcard), Port Harcourt was established by Frederick Lugard from Ikwere and Wakirike settlements for the sole purpose of exporting coal from what was incorporated as the city of Enugu (the city also grew from miners coming mostly from the Nkanu and Agbaja area and also the present day Anambra area). The Eastern Line railway connecting Enugu with Port Harcourt was completed in 1916 in order to export the coal through Port Harcourt.
