Fans all over the world will have congratulated Formula One racing driver Sebastian Vettel this weekend after he won the Formula One championship. For some local fans this is tinged with a little sadness as they have to accept that their hero no longer lives in the canton.
Vettel had been living in a flat on Zugerstrasse on the canton’s riviera in Walchwil since 2006 but last year he moved to the canton of Thurgau. By all accounts he was very happy in the municipality with its 3,600 other residents. He used to go walking by the lake with his girlfriend Hanna, trained with the local Walchwil football club, went paddling on the lake and, like lots of other people, he bought his bread rolls at Spar. In fact in November 2008 an official reception was given in his honour in the town hall and many fans from all over came to see him and got his autograph. Not unsurprisingly, when he left for Thurgau, the municipality of Walchwil wondered if they had not done enough for him.
However, mayor Tobias Hürlimann claims Vettel still has contact with the municipality as he still owns the flat there. “It is a shame he left, especially since he liked water-sports so much and he will not be able to do that so easily in Thurgau. He applied for a motor-boat licence and wanted a mooring buoy but at the time there was none left for him and we had to put him on the waiting list, which is the normal procedure. I felt he enjoyed just being accepted as one of the locals. When I sent him an e-mail to say I could offer him a personal solution, he never replied.”
Vettel’s father, Norbert, a joiner by trade, had allegedly been looking for a farm in the area to renovate for his son but Hürlimann had had to inform him that all such property was in the possession of locals. “We could not do anything; and after all, it is not our job to act as an estate agent,” said Hürlimann.
Wherever Vettel lives, he can be assured of great support from the residents of Walchwil, not least from his former old lady neighbour on whom he left a very favourable impression. “We are very happy about his latest success and we will definitely send him our congratulations on his becoming the world’s youngest two-time world champion,” added Hürlimann.
