Patrick Verona had never been particularly good at apologies.
He was good at sarcasm, at leaning against walls like he owned the place, at pretending he didn't care what anyone thought. But apologies? Those usually came out crooked, buried beneath half-grins and jokes that only made things worse.
Which explained why the two of you hadn't spoken in four days.
Four.
Entire.
Days.
It was ridiculous, really. The argument had started over something unbelievably stupid.
Patrick had let his temper get the better of him after a rough day, snapped at you when you were only trying to help, and then—being Patrick—had doubled down instead of admitting he'd been wrong.
You'd walked away before either of you said something you'd regret even more.
Now here you were, stuffing books into your locker with far more force than necessary.
"You know," a familiar voice drawled behind you, "you're gonna scare the poor locker if you keep slamming it like that."
You froze.
Patrick.
You sighed without turning around.
"What do you want?"
"Well... ideally?"
He stepped around so he was standing in front of you, rocking back on his heels.
"...I'd like my girl back."
Your eyes narrowed.
"I'm not your girl."
"Ouch."
He clutched dramatically at his chest.
"That one actually hurt, sweetheart."
"You'll survive."
"I probably will."
He nodded thoughtfully before holding something out from behind his back.
A small bouquet of wildflowers.
Not the perfectly arranged kind from a florist.
The kind that looked like he'd stopped somewhere on the walk to school and picked every flower he could find.
Some were crooked.
One was definitely a daisy missing half its petals.
You stared at them.
"...Patrick."
"I know they're not exactly fancy."
"You stole these, didn't you?"
"I prefer the term 'borrowed from nature.'"
Despite yourself, the corner of your mouth twitched.
He noticed immediately.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The almost-smile."
"There wasn't an almost-smile."
"There absolutely was."
You rolled your eyes.
"I saw it."
"You imagined it."
He grinned.
"I've got witnesses."
"There are no witnesses."
"I'm my own witness."
"You are unbelievable."
"I've been told."
He held the flowers out again.
"For you."
You hesitated before taking them.
"They're kind of ugly."
"I know."
"They're uneven."
"I noticed."
"One of these is literally just a weed."
Patrick shrugged.
"Yeah."
"...Why?"
"'Cause they're honest."
You blinked.
"I couldn't find anything perfect."
His smile softened into something much smaller, much more vulnerable.
"So I brought you something real instead."
The hallway suddenly felt a lot quieter.
Patrick rubbed the back of his neck, looking unusually nervous.
"I was a jerk."
You stayed silent.
"I shouldn't have snapped at you."
Still nothing.
"I was angry about everything except you... and somehow I took it out on the one person who didn't deserve it."
His eyes finally met yours.
"I'm sorry."
No joke.
No sarcastic remark.
Just those two words.
"I hate that we haven't talked," he admitted quietly. "I keep seeing things that remind me of you, and then I remember you're still mad at me."
"I was hurt."
"I know."
"You made me feel like I didn't matter."
His face fell immediately.
"You always matter."
"You didn't act like it."
"I know."
There wasn't a single excuse in his voice.
Just regret.
"I can't take it back."
"No."
"But I'll spend as long as I have making sure you never doubt how much I love you again."
Your heart betrayed you first.
It always had when it came to Patrick Verona.
You looked down at the messy bouquet in your hands.
"They're really ugly."
"They're growing on you."
"They're falling apart."
"So am I."
You looked back up at him.
"You practiced that line."
"...Maybe."
"I knew it."
"I had a backup one too."
"What was it?"
He cleared his throat dramatically.
"'If you don't forgive me, I'll probably write terrible poetry until you do.'"
A laugh escaped before you could stop it.
Patrick's entire face lit up.
"There it is."
"What?"
"My favorite sound."
Your smile lingered despite your best efforts.
"You make this very difficult."
"I've always had that effect on you, baby."
He took one careful step closer.
"So..."
"So?"
"Can I hug you..."
He paused.
"...or am I still in emotional timeout?"
You tried to keep your expression serious.
"You are... on probation."
"I'll take probation."
"You have to earn the hug."
"I can do that."
"You also owe me lunch."
"Done."
"And a milkshake."
"Absolutely."
"And next time you're upset—"
"I talk to you."
"Instead of taking it out on me."
He nodded immediately.
"Promise."
You studied him for another long moment.
Then, slowly, you reached for his hand.
Patrick looked down at your fingers lacing with his like you'd just handed him the entire world.
"So..." he murmured.
"So..."
"You don't hate me anymore?"
You sighed dramatically.
"I was trying."
"But?"
"But you make apologizing annoyingly adorable."
His grin returned in full force.
"I knew the flowers would work."
"They absolutely did not."
"The sweet names?"
"No."
"My incredibly handsome face?"
You rolled your eyes one last time before stepping forward and wrapping your arms around him.
Patrick hugged you back so carefully, like he was afraid you'd disappear if he held on too tightly.
"I missed you," he whispered into your hair.
"I know."
"I'm really sorry, sweetheart."
You smiled against his shoulder.
"I know that too."
For someone who wasn't very good at apologies, Patrick somehow managed to make you believe every word.
And as he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of your head, you decided that maybe forgiveness wasn't about forgetting the fight.
Maybe it was about choosing each other anyway.
And Patrick?
He was definitely worth choosing.
why did i just encounter a guy my age who was a replica of patrick verona. this shit has to be on purpose.
patrick verona with can't take my eyes off of you
Doodle I made while working on other art (I’ll probably make more serious art of them but I was sad so)
recently rewatched 10 things i hate about you and I don't think any young actor of the current conventionally attractive spread can make me feel anything remotely similar to what heath ledger in a black shirt with paint in his hair did. them ovaries were being TESTED
ouh guys I think it's time to rewatch ten things I hate about you and see how much I can remember from when I watched it so many times I memorised it 💔
