I have a theory as to why captain Picard is so aloof and doesn't generally let people get too close...

One of two oldest friends, Jack Crusher.

First time we hear about him he's already dead.

Second of the two oldest friends, Walker Keel.

His ship gets blown up in the same episode he was introduced in.

Alright, how about another old friend, captain Donald Varley?

Uh... His ship blew up. Right in front of eyes of the TNG crew.

It sounds about right that character who lost every best friend so far subconsciously connected their deaths to his friendship with them and figured it's better to keep people at a distance, which would, in his mind, either protect them entirely from the same fate, or at least make it a little bit less painful for him.

I mean it probably isn't the ONLY reason why he does that but it does make a pretty good explanation, doesn't it?

Starfleet is secretly controlled by Bluegills, they’re the reason that Starfleet is focused so heavily on exploration and very little on defense. Look it up! LCARS Walker Keel.

Captain Walker Keel: Commanding Officer, U.S.S. Horatio. Suspected that Starfleet had been co-opted by a secret alien influence late in 2364. Brought Captains Rixx and Tryla Scott into his cabal, unaware that the latter had already been turned. Keel grew more paranoid and didn’t trust his first officer or his chief medical officer. Arranged for a secret meeting with Rixx and Scott and brought along Captain Picard. After confirming to his best of his abilities that Picard was still himself, he voiced his concerns to his old friend but without firm evidence, Picard wouldn’t go any further. Not long after the Horatio was destroyed, evidence suggested it was sabotage. There were no survivors.

*Jack walks in with baby Wesley in his arms*

Picard and Walker: *stare*

Jack: Bev's on medical conference, so I got Wes for a couple of days! 😀

Some random crewman: Commander, here's report.

Jack: Thanks. *can't hold Wesley with only one arm, so he hands him over to Picard who's the closest to him* Hey, can you hold him for a minute?

Picard: *visibly tenses and stares at Jack in protest, but he's already busy with report on the PADD* 😐

Walker: *snorts* 😂

Picard: *very awkwardly holds Wesley*

Suddenly, without warning, Wesley grabs his hair and pulls (cause babies to stuff like that).

Walker is absolutely losing it as he watches Picard trying not to make a sound, even though it clearly hurts. He may or may not have pullen out a holo camera.

Jack, handing back the datapad: I can take him now, thank you, Jean- *sees what's happening* Wesley, no, you can't pull uncle Picard's hair like that! *quickly takes Wesley back, gently detangling his fingers from Picard's hair* I'm so sorry. 😨

Picard: *clearly tried not to be awkward about it but fails, touching the spot on his head where it's still hurting* Not... A... Problem...

Walker: *snickers like an idiot* 🤣

Picard, glaring at him: Not. A. Word. 😑
