Anne was able to secure a loan to sink her coal pit in real life? Do you think they’ll go with this storyline in ep 8?
What really happened: In 1833, before leaving England, Anne requested a £2,000 letter of credit from Rawson’s Bank [The Real Anne Lister]. From Female Fortune: “In mid June [1833] (…) Anne Lister sorted through her books and her business affairs, leaving her new steward Samuel Washington detailed instructions for managing the estate while she was abroad”. So, I guess, those £2,000 were for managing the estate in her absence, from what I’ve read it’s possible that during that time she was “planning a strategic coal-road from the top of Old Bank across John Bottomley’s land” [FF]. But she never took out the loan against the deeds to Shibden and she wasn’t sinking a pit at that time. Anne did sink the coal pit, yes, but she starts planning for it in September 1834, after marrying Ann Walker. Money were not a problem for her after her marriage, at least not as before and not for sinking the coal pit. She received loans from Ann regularly. The pit was called the Walker pit “in compliment to A- [Ann Walker]”, Anne Lister writes.
The show goes in another direction, so I don’t know how they’re gonna handle it since it’s made up. What I fear will happen is this: Anne is about to lose Shibden but in the meantime Anne Walker comes back from Scotland, they reunite, they marry, and so Shibden is saved because Anne, thanks to her marriage, will finally have the money she needed.
