I look at people holding hands in the hallways and I try to think about how it all works. At the school dances, I sit in the background,and I tap my toe, and I wonder how many couples will dance to "their song". In the hallways, I see the girls wearing the guys jackets, and think about the idea of property. And I wonder if anyone is happy. I hope they are. I really hope they are.

Rowan had kept to herself for a few days, concentrating on work and other things that didn't frustrate her and make her think too much. She tended not to go outside when she had a string of bad days in a row, because she didn't want to lash out or have an episode in public or something equally terrible. But she hadn't spoken to Charlie in quite a while, and the girl had recently come home from some sort of appointment or meeting, and she wanted to visit. She'd showered and put on her most comfortable, soft summer dress and stood outside the door with a plate of brownies. After being let in, she waited on the couch, the porcelain of the dish cold against her knees as she hummed to herself.
