Erigeron canadensis, horseweed

The initial impact is bright and herby, punchier than oregano, but a flavor that might fit in with Italian spices. Then, it's hot. Not horseradishy, not peppery, just kind of an "ow why does it feel like" on the surface of my tongue. Possibly I am allergic or possibly one should not eat hairy leaves like those of horseweed without drying them. I ate two leaves, just to be sure.

Every time I go on a hike, I try to find a new plant to eat.

I used to think this part of the continent had very few things that were edible, and even fewer that were palatable, but it turns out that there are many more tasty plants around me (and probably around you) than convention would have us believe.

I am going to start writing reviews of the plants I eat, so you'll know if you want to eat them, too.

And don't fret that I'm going to eat something that will kill me. Most "poisonous" plants are only toxic in quantity, but I check to make sure I am not going to eat anything deadly before I bite into it, anyway.

When I was a kid I ordered a whale book from scholastic that had a CD with whale songs on it and the funniest thing I've ever done is hold onto that CD long enough to have a car to play to CD in, and every time I picked someone up for the first time I'd play the whale song CD like it was the sort of music I was into
