I think it is vastly dependant on geographical context whether a fairy or a walrus knocking on yout door is more surprising.

For example if a walrus knocked on my door I'd be rather surprised; I live a day's travel away from any kind of ocean and none of the oceans that are a day's travel from me have walruses. But I'm fairly certain fairies could be around somewhere close to me.

But if I for example lived along the shore of Alaska I probably would expect a walrus to knock on my door.
