Walt Disney with Roald Dahl and a collection of plush toys of characters from Dahl’s first children’s book, The Gremlins, c. 1943.
The book, about gremlins who work together with the British Royal Air Force to fight against Hitler, was published under the Walt Disney Company with the intention of being made into an animated feature. The project was eventually abandoned after pre-production due to issues with copyright and Disney’s restrictions in working with the British Air Ministry. However, the gremlin characters were subsequently used by Warner Bros. in several WWII propaganda cartoons and Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories.
