Leonardo da Vinci kept meticulous notes on everything that captured his curious and creative mind from math problems, architectural designs, inventions, sketches, and doodles. His notebooks also include notes-to-self in his distinctive mirror-image handwriting. Moving freely between art and science, engineering and the humanity, da Vinci never stopped experimenting.
His wild imagination led him to envision flying machines before such things were possible by centuries. His keen observation on human body made significant contributions to science and medicine. His paintings, such as “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” made him one of the most celebrated artists in history.
In a Harvard Gazette article, author Walter Isaacson talks about his recently published biography on Leonardo da Vinci. Read the article to learn more about da Vinci’s creative process and what his remarkable life still has to teach us.
Here at the Fine Arts Library, we hold a number of facsimiles of da Vinci’s notebooks. Some of his notebooks were rather tiny. In this post, we’ll post some pages from ms. E from the da Vinci manuscripts held at the Institute de France in Paris.
