Walter Wanderley – Pure Bossa Nova
Pure Bossa Nova: A View On The Music Of Walter Wanderley is a compilation album released as part of the broader “Pure Bossa Nova” series, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Bossa Nova movement. It provides a concise introduction to the work of the legendary Brazilian organist, whose signature staccato style on the Hammond B3 organ helped define the sound of bossa nova for international audiences.
Tracklist Highlights
The album features many of Wanderley's most famous interpretations of bossa nova standards:
Samba de Verão (Summer Samba): His most famous hit, which reached the Billboard Top 40 in 1966.
Vivo Sonhando: A classic composition by Antônio Carlos Jobim.
Song Of The Jet (Samba Do Avião): Another Jobim standard frequently associated with Wanderley's breezy style.
Telefone: Performed with his Conjunto and an orchestra.
Berimbau: A rhythmic, percussion-heavy track that showcases his band's tight arrangements.
Reception. The AllMusic review by John Bush awarded the album 4 stars and stated: “The Brazilian organist whose sound was more recognizable than any other organist, Walter Wanderley recorded often during the ’60s for Verve labels, including his biggest hit, 1966’s “Samba de Verão.” That song and 13 others from 1964-1966 are included on the solid yet brief compilation Pure Bossa Nova.”
Musical Significance
Walter Wanderley was a pivotal figure in the 1960s bossa nova explosion in the United States. Often categorized today as "lounge" or "easy listening," his music was considered revolutionary at the time for its innovative use of jazz harmonies and staccato organ phrasing. This compilation serves as a "best-of" that draws heavily from his prime years, particularly tracks found on his platinum-selling album Rain Forest.

Walter Wanderley – Samba So!
A rare bossa session by Wanderly – recorded early in his career in Brazil, and issued here in the US by World Pacific. It’s as tight a batch of bossa organ grooves as any of Wanderley’s best albums from the 60’s – and he’s playing with a larger lineup than usual, which adds a lot to the sound, and the group’s got Bolao on sax and flute, and Heraldo Do Monte on guitar. All the cuts have Wanderley’s trademark firey organ sound, and the titles include “Samba In Japan”, “Sad Samba”, “Samba Da Minha Terra”, “Samba Novo”, and “Samba De Bossa”. Nice stuff, and a very groovy album of bossa organ! (Dusty Groove).
Walter Wanderley – Talkin’ Verve
Talkin' Verve highlights Walter Wanderley's signature Brazilian bossa nova style, blending smooth organ melodies with rhythmic samba beats. Known for his light, breezy approach, this album showcases his knack for creating lively yet relaxed atmospheres, ideal for a casual listening experience. Key tracks like "Samba de Verão" provide infectious grooves, making this album a staple for fans of Latin jazz.
