Wang Guangyi, father of communist pop

Born in 1957 in the cold Heilongjiang province, in China, Wang Guangyi has become one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese painters. Wang is oftenly known as the "Chinese Warhol" thanks to his "political pop" paintings, that mixes the aesthetics of communist propaganda with logos of some of the most iconic western companies. In his works, stony workers and peasants collide with brand logos of Coca-Cola, Rolls Royce or Louis Vuiton. By doing this, the artists underlines the contradictions of nowadays Chinese society. Wang Guangyi is also known for being very critical about Western influence about Chinese art and, although he started painting more than 20 years ago, he never stops looking for new ways to reflect what he calls "Chinese essence" through his paintings.
