there are a lot of bad SPN opinions but two of them make me feel straight-up gaslit, as the kids say:
1. Dean and Cas and Sam and Cas have basically the same relationship and it’s only fandom being arbitrary that made one of them so much more popular
2. Jensen is bad at acting
Sabriel: overachieving student with black eyes and hair and an intense parent raised in a foreign country has an incredible heritage but when she returns to her father’s home she realizes that while she knows some of the facts of her heritage she doesn’t understand the history and customs the way people raised there do, and in fact some people know more about her family than she does, and by seeking out safety and opportunity on her behalf her father in fact cut her off from a full understanding of where she came from.
Old Kingdom fans: Sabriel isn’t Asian and I don’t understand why you relate to her as an Asian-American woman
Me: k
For anyone who wants canon proof of my claim in this post here, this is it:
Ava: Thank you for notifying us about Director Hunter’s whereabouts.
Sara, on screen, in response: Now the Legends are free to fly the skies?
Ava: Affirmative.
That is clearly stating they made a deal; she clearly traded Rip for their own freedom. Thousands of agents did not die, but rather 20 on a sanctioned mission that they signed up for of their own free will. Darhk would have been resurrected with or without Rip’s presence.
And now, because I’ve reached the end of my rope, is the time I would like to bring up a list of a bunch of things Captain Mary Sue Lance has done this season that is never talked about.
So this season Sara:
1. Took a timeship that wasn’t hers and earned it back by... screwing up immediately and then fixing the mistake her and her legends made.
2. Her spurring reasoning for taking back the Waverider is literally because she and the rest of the Legends are bored.
3. Under her leadership the next mission (a level one basic anachronism) was also screwed, BIG TIME, and yet instead of taking it on to herself and her team she used a man who (rightfully needed to at this point) was watching over them and HELD HIM AT GUNPOINT SO HE COULD TAKE THE BLAME.
4. Heard from Agent Sharpe herself that she was now LAWFULLY committing criminal acts, and yet never picked up at rule book or change their methods in anyway, methods that prove to be wholly unreliable and dangerous.
5. From that point on she and the rest of the Legends insult the TB, even calling it a Gastapo, to one of its members faces, because they dare to tell them what they’re doing is wrong. Even though they were doing actual good.
6. Nearly rammed the Waverider into the FAR LARGER AND STILL SHIELDED TB ship in an extremely reckless and frankly stupid idea that could have killed everyone on board and either way cause sever damage to the Waverider, and quite possibly Gideon.
7. Never tries to change her and the Legend’s method of work, never picks up a rule book, never tries to work with the TB and instead knowingly creates a criminal record for her and her team.
8. Doesn’t agree to help Rip, someone who JUST TOLD THEM A TIME ENDING DEMON WAS ON THE LOOSE, until he promises to get rid of their criminal record (a record they, again, KNOWINGLY MADE). It’s important to note for the next bit that Rip has, by canon, been giving the Legends leniency. This means he was already doing things to lessen their criminal record or keep the TB from them this whole time.
8. Then, knowing that Rip is probably right, knowing the Bureau isn’t going to help, knowing he could have been jailed, knowing this was a sanctioned mission, she LITERALLY TRADES RIP TO REMOVE A CRIMINAL RECORD THEY MADE AND OWNED. She never checks up on him again and never thinks of his mission till 3x09 or something.
(For all of you who don’t know, this what villains do; trade someone else for themselves. It can also be classified as selling out or betraying, as her motives, as proven above, were selfish and without thinking of the long term consequences).
9. Her first reaction to hearing “scores of agents have died” from Ava is “we’ve had it hard too!”
10. Even after hearing about Rip in jail, even after knowing he was right, she makes no attempt to help him outside of asking Ava for updates about her reaching him.
11. Oh I forgot to mention, as soon as they stop hunting them down Sara is completely fine with the Bureau and Ava, and all their personal beliefs about them being a military regime and bad go out the window. Double standards.
12. Overall she has displayed dangerous levels of arrogance, self-centred tendencies, recklessness, and self-righteousness, and woeful inexperience.
And she faces 0 consequence for this. She never learns from any of these things, she has suffered no major loss of defeat this season like every growing character should, and she’s always complimented in every single episode when her actions have shown that she is... not deserving of it! She’s praised and adored when it’s clear there should be some moments of “listen, you’re really fucking up” without a tone of them being completely irrational and too stuck in their ‘lawful’ ways.
And because of her lack of having her flaws and failures pointed out and used she has received literally no character growth. And no, making people fall in love with her as Captain of the Waverider (a title and captaincy she, by the way, got from Rip, though is that ever brought up?) or getting the death totem or the whole “I’m stronger then Mallus so I can beat him out of my head” plot they have going for her is not character growth, it is having the spotlight shine on her with no real work, sacrifice, or loss on her side.
(Example, the Spear of Destiny, or has everyone forgotten who really suffered to keep the Spear safe?)
It’s an insult to every other character and her’s; Sara has become borderline one dimensional at this point.
Breaking laws is not a good way to make a name for yourself. Being criminals is not good. Trading people who needed your help off to get rid of said criminal record is not good.
So if anytime someone asks me why I have such a problem with Sara, this is why.
as long as I’m being wanky. it is pretty funny seeing people defend the finale with “platonic relationships matter!” when these same people spent years being furious at the idea of the Winchesters having friends
I do think it’s funny how people will be like “duhhhh the finale was what the show’s always been about sorry if you can’t understand that!”
when I know these people were flipping the fuck out about how the finale was going to be terrible until 15.20 actually aired because the writers “didn’t understand the show” or whatever. almost like they knew the show wasn’t heading in that direction too.
Do you prefer Samwitch to Saileen?
yeah. no offense to Sam/Eileen, it’s a good ship, I just like Sam/Rowena much better. I think Sam and Rowena is one of the most interesting and developed relationships Sam has ever had, plus they have excellent chemistry together. it’s probably my second-favorite Sam ship next to Sam/Ruby? and I didn’t really expect the show to end with romantic endgames, but Sam/Rowena was obviously much more likely to happen than that one lol
if you’re talking about this post, I just think it’s funnyyyy that people will go on about how Sam needs to like, realize there’s nothing inherently bad in being a “freak” and embrace witchy/weird stuff, all of which I agree with, but then the post will end with, like, ...and that’s why he MUST have an endgame with Eileen! and often they’ll often be like “duhhhh Sam/Rowena was never happening” like it’s ridiculous to think anything could’ve come of it. that’s the conclusion I don’t get. I don’t think Eileen would stop him from embracing that side of himself, like I said it’s a good ship, you’re just like. describing a large part of the appeal of Sam/Rowena.
yanno I kept getting recommended some dude’s YouTube video about his Supernatural theory, so I decided to watch it
and no shade or anything
but it just kinda shows how much “male fandom” is dedicated to plot over literally anything else, including all characterization and themes lol.
so this dude’s big theory was that Chuck isn’t actually God, but part of a trio of godly siblings with Amara and the Empty guy. the theory says that the Empty guy is actually God, and he’s actually a good and caring guy, but he’s been banished by Chuck, who’s been fooling everyone since, because God has to be a good guy.
and his reasoning was weirdly like... giving the show too much credit and not giving the show enough credit at the same time.
like I forget all his evidence for Chuck not really being God, but one of the pieces of evidence was that Chuck didn’t know Gabriel hadn’t actually died back in S5. but like, I’ll put money on that being nothing other than simple inconsistency and the writers not knowing they were gonna bring Gabriel back several seasons later. most of the pieces of evidence were like that.
but mostly I’m just kinda baffled at how much dudes in fandom are soooo desperate for every little plot thing to have to fit together that they completely ignore some of the show’s big themes? it just would not fit this show for God to be an actual good guy and fight alongside the Winchesters in the end. it’s ignoring thematic consistency (SPN does plenty of that on its own lol) for a ... sorta cool twist?
I’m sure the show will make lots of mistakes along the way, and Rob Benedict is pretty clearly beloved and they probably don’t wanna offend anyone too badly (I think I remember they wanted to kill him at the end of S11, but weren’t allowed by the network?) so I dunno just how ~evil God will end up. but it’s amazing how perfect God as the last Big Bad is on this show. that is a way better story than trying to force 10000 minor characters into THE LORE because you can’t see past the plot.
I don’t want to say being into the plot is bad or wrong. there is no wrong way to fan. but I DO think male fans obsessively focus on plot and lore, usually while shitting on any shipping for “missing the point” (to be fair, this guy in particular did not bring up shipping at all), but then they end up baffled at character arcs that seem really obvious to parts of fandom that aren’t so hardcore fixated on nothing but how the plot is going to come together.
