#3281 - Melaleuca systena - Coastal Honeymyrtle
First formally described in 1824 as Billottia acerosa by Italian botanist Luigi Aloysius Colla, but was later changed to Melaleuca acerosa. But that named was already given to another plant, which was itself later changed to Calothamnus quadrifidus. The current binomial is the work of Lyndley Craven and Brendan Lepschi in 1999. 'Systena' means 'tapering' and refers to the leaf shape.
This Melaleuca grows in stabilised sand dunes and in sand over laterite and sandstone, along the WA coast from Geraldton down to the southern coastline.
