Refurbished Waiting Room at Calvary Mater Newcastle
“On behalf of staff, patients, their family and friends, I would like to thank Dry Julyers for their fundraising efforts on behalf of Calvary Mater Newcastle.
The Haematology Ward Waiting Room was fortunate to benefit from a makeover thanks to Dry Julyers generosity.
This area allows patients and their families and friends to have a haven away from the ward. The new couches and lounge chairs provide comfort for those who need to wait – whether that is for doctor reviews, investigation results, transport, outpatient bookings, etc.
The room also adds a bit of colour and comfort to our patient’s lives during their stay on the ward as commonly patients stay in our care for at least a month. The room presents the opportunity for a change of scenery and some home comforts.
It is so lovely to walk past the room and see patients and their carers having the opportunity to not only relax in a comfortable setting, but also have the chance to chat with other people going through similar circumstances.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital has planned to use funds from Dry July 2015 towards a number of areas around the hospital to help make cancer patients a little more comfortable:
Replacement waiting room chairs in ward 3 East (the existing chairs were over 5 years old and endure heavy duty use).
Washing machine and dryer in the palliative care unit, for patient use. Patients feel more comfortable when able to wear their own clothing. The hospital laundry is not able to wash patients’ clothing, so having a washer and dry in-house will make a big difference to patients and their families.
Lay-flat recliners to enable visitors to stay overnight when needed (on Level 7 of the new the new VCCC RMH cancer services). Some patients may also prefer to sleep in chairs due to personal preference or because of respiratory issues.
Garden view visualisation space for inpatients on Level 7 of the new VCCC RMSH cancer services (until funding is available for the proposed garden area).
Expansion of the Bridge of Support breast cancer service, which is a peer support program run in conjunction with BreaCan.
