The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel by the American author Stephen Crane (1871–1900). During the American Civil War, the story is about a young Union Army man, Henry Fleming, who escapes from the battlefield. Overcoming embarrassment, he aspires to receive a wound, the “Red Badge of Courage” to counter his cowardice. When his regiment encounters the enemy again, Henry acts as a flag bearer. Although Crane was born after the war and had not experienced first-hand war at the time, the novel is known for its realism. He began writing what became his second novel, using various contemporary and written narratives (such as the one previously published by Century Magazine) as inspiration. He is believed to have based his imaginary battle on the Chancellorsville War. He may also have interviewed veterans of the 124th New York Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the Orange Blossoms. The novel, which was first shortened and serialized in newspapers in December 1894, was published in full in October 1895.
