Oh thank god. Finally someone else who LIKED the movie. I felt like the humor, especially with Luke and Daisy was perfectly note perfect for their characters. I could have done with a little less Kylo, but that’s because if they were going to keep him irredeemable then why bother trying to build him up as conflicted? And yeah the casino planet didn’t quite fit in the rest of the movie.
I’m really excited to see it again, because I think there’s going to be a lot of stuff that makes more sense on a second viewing, or that will settle my thoughts on it. (I’m especially excited for the director’s cut, because it felt like there was a lot that got cut for time, and I’ll be really interested to see how all that fits in.)
There was so much good with Luke and Rey. The scene where Yoda showed up was hilarious and also made me tear up a little bit. (Everything about Luke was fantastic and broke my heart. He’s still our hero, but he sure did fuck up, and it took him a long time and a big push to own that.) I didn’t even mind the Kylo stuff, even though he’s the least interesting part of this, because it was really clear that his falling to the dark side was his choice. He had many opportunities to rethink what he was doing, many times when he was conflicted about the rightness of his cause, and he chose not to take those opportunities and double down on his bullshit instead. Same with Rey--she had darkness, and even explored that darkness and freaked out Luke with it, but she chose not to give in to it. I liked that it emphasized that no one is automatically light or dark, but you choose your own actions, and that’s on you.
The casino planet did have some good stuff in it (space horses!) but the rest of the movie was all set in pretty intimate spaces, and I think they would have done well to keep that going with all three storylines, if they had to split it into three. (Not to mention that would have freed up more time to give us a longer Phasma fight, because honestly I expected more there.)
