He’s idly playing with her hair, fingers massaging the back of her scalp as his eyes stare at the tv screen — suddenly his eyebrows knit together and his lips press into a thin line, he doesn’t know form where the thought comes but before he chase it away, he blurts it out.

       “ Do you think I would be a good dad? ”

“ Mae! Hey babe. ” Eli’s voice is breathless, but the tone suggest he’s happy, grinning from ear to ear “ I just wanted to check with you — ” Another voice, a woman’s voice, cuts in asking something about a velvet box, Eli covers the speak so her question is muffled.

A minute passes until he takes his hand off the speaker and speaks again “ Okay, so.. do you have any plans tonight? ” He sounds suddenly nervous, there’s static cracks when he sighs against the phone before carrying on “ I wanted to make you dinner, just the two of us – what you think? ” Another round of static, louder this time, indicates a deeper breath “ I have a surprise for you. ” Eli singsongs, pulling an embarrassed chuckle from himself “ See you at home, bye! ”
