The rise in sea temperatures in recent years has killed coral reefs globally at an alarming rate, destroying marine life and damaging natural coastal barriers -- leaving coastal population centers at risk as storms become more common and more violent. The loss of coral reefs may cost $1 trillion globally, according to an Australian study, including the loss of millions of travelers and hundreds of thousands of tourism industry jobs worldwide.
