WARPED TOUR 101 - A GUIDE BY MAYDAYPARADEFANS

Over the past few weeks, I've been getting a lot of asks about warped tour and tips for first timers. Therefore, I decided to make one gigantic post to hopefully answer everyone's questions and help you survive warped tour! These are just some tips that I think would be helpful based on my years going to warped tour. You can read it all in the read more :) Enjoy!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

You really don't want to bring too much, but you don't want to forget anything either. 

Drawstring bag - drawstring bags are perfect for warped. They are usually not too heavy and are made of light fabrics that won't hold you down. Use it to hold all of your important things like your money and water. 

Water bottle - the venue usually allows you to bring one factory sealed bottle of water. Take advantage of that. Wrap it in tinfoil to keep it cold and keep it in your drawstring bag. 

Plastic ziploc bags - you never know if it'll rain. Throw a few in your drawstring bag in case it starts raining you can throw your phone and other important things that can't get wet in them quickly. 

Money - this one is obvious. You're going to need money throughout the day to buy merch, drinks and food. Try to bring cash because not all places accept credit cards and there might not be an ATM. 

Sunscreen - yet another obvious one, but you don't want to get sunburned. It's hot and you're outside all day underneath the harsh sun. Keep reapplying and avoid nasty burns!

Sharpie - you never know when you'll run into your favorite band member and you want to be prepared if you do. Warped tour sells sharpies for $2 if you do forget one, but why waste your money if you don't have to? 

Hair tie - this is mainly for girls, but it's going to be hot and you don't want your hair hanging down on your neck. Bring one to throw your hair up real fast if anything. 

WHAT DO I WEAR?

DRESS COMFORTABLY. This is warped tour. You're going to get dirty, hot, and sweaty. You might as well be comfortable while doing it. 

WEAR COMFORTABLE SNEAKERS. You're going to be on your feet all day, you're going to want to wear comfortable shoes. Even though it is hot and flip flops might seem the way to go, it's not a good idea. You could easily lose a shoe, or get your foot stepped on. Leave them for a beach day. 

Wear light comfortable clothing. You want to be cool in the sun all day so wear something that would keep you that way. Obviously no hoodies or anything for the winter. 

You can wear a bathing suit, if you'd like. A lot of people do and many people are more comfortable that way. If that's what you wanna wear then do it! 

THE NIGHT BEFORE/THE MORNING OF

Pack your bag the night before so you're not scrambling around in the morning to get things together. Have your tickets out and ready to go so you don't forget them. 

Get a good night's rest. Yeah it sounds lame, but you don't want to be exhausted all day! 

Have a good breakfast. DO NOT go to warped tour without eating. It will be hot and you don't want to pass out as soon as you get there. 

If you get twitter to your phone, turn on notifications for all of the bands you want to see. This way, if they tweet their set time or signing time, you have it right on your phone ahead of time. 

GETTING THERE

Make sure you find out what time doors open for your specific venue. Get there early because traffic can get pretty bad and you don't want to miss your favorite band. 

If you're driving, carpool with your friends! Some venues may charge for parking and you can save money by carpooling with your friends. 

Most venues have a drop off/pick up place so your parents can easily do that if you don't want to drive yourself or can't do that just yet!

The Feed Our Children tent offers a way to skip the line and get in early. Take advantage of it! Bring in three cans of food (no dents or expired food, they won't be accepted) to the Feed Our Children tent right in front of the venue and immediately get a wristband to skip the line and get in before everyone else. 

If you don't have any cans or forget to bring them, Feed Our Children also accepts $5 donations for a wristband to skip the line, so take advantage of that as well. 

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET IN?

It's usually a mad rush once the doors open to get into the venue. Many people will run over to the big inflatable that has all of the bands and set times on it. 

There will be people selling maps and schedules for $2 at the door. Have money ready and buy one! It'll save you the trouble of having to run all of the way to the inflatable set times with everyone else and you'll have the paper on you all day so you can see set times whenever you want. 

If you don't have to see a band immediately, take a walk around and find all of your favorite band's tents. Each band has their own tent and they usually have their set time and signing/meet and greet time there. 

MEET AND GREETS AND SIGNINGS

Many bands offer signings and meet and greets throughout the day. Most bands will either tweet if they are doing one and the location/time or they will have it posted at their tent.

You are usually not allowed to take pictures with band members at signings unless they say you can. 

You are usually allowed to have one item signed. If you don't have anything on you, you can always buy a poster or have your ticket signed. 

Depending on where the singing is, there might only be a certain amount of people allowed. Many tents only allow the first 200 fans and other tents give out wristbands. If that's the case, MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE EARLY. If there are wristbands or a limited amount of fans, they will go fast. 

Sometimes bands offer meet and greets where you can take pictures with them. Those are usually limited so get there early. 

TAKE ADVANTAGE! 

There's so many things to do at warped tour, and so many opportunities to take advantage of. There are free things all over the place, you just have to find them! 

The best free thing that warped tour offers is FREE WATER. This is why it is so important to bring your own bottle of water. You can keep refilling it throughout the day at the water tent FOR FREE. Seriously take advantage of that since the venue usually charges like $5 for a bottle of water. The tent doesn't stay open all of warped tour, it usually closes around 6 so make sure you fill up once before it closes. 

Many tents give out free things just for checking out their stuff. One year there was free vitamin water and another year free slurpees from 7-11. This year they give out small cans of peace tea for free, you just have to find the tent! 

Most times warped also has tents that give off mist to help you cool off. If you're feeling hot try to find that tent to cool off. They also sometimes have a slip-n-slide if you're feeling adventurous and want to cool off. You just have to find them as well. 

Walk around the venue and go to all of the tents. Many clothing companies give out cool things like stickers and keychains just for checking out their stuff so make sure you take a look. 

WHAT COULD GO WRONG? 

A lot could go wrong at warped tour. For starters, it's usually super hot. People forget to eat and drink and because of that they pass out. 

If you need help throughout the day whether you feel sick or get hurt, there are doctors and a medical tent already at the venue to help you. Just look for the flags that say first aid and there are people already there to help you out with whatever you need. 

Anxiety/claustrophobia - many people have both of these things and there's no reason to avoid warped tour because of that. If you're nervous about the crowds or being close together in the heat, you can still enjoy your favorite band. Just stand on the side or toward the back. You don't always have to be close up to enjoy the band. 

Help each other out! I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's super hot and it really takes a toll on people. If you see someone that isn't feeling well or has fallen or passed out, HELP THEM. You're all there because you have a love of music. You're basically friends so take care of each other. You would want someone to help you if it were you. 

THE DOS AND DON'TS 

At the end of the day you're at warped tour to have fun and enjoy seeing your favorite bands so make sure you enjoy it! 

Do stay hydrated. Keep drinking throughout the day to keep water in your system and avoid passing out. You're going to be sweating a lot so keep drinking to balance that out. 

Do make time to eat. It's easy to get lost in the joys of warped tour and forget to eat. Try to find some time during the day to sit and eat something real fast. You need foor in your system to keep you going all day. 

Do reapply your sunscreen. You'll be in the sun all day so keep reapplying so you don't get a nasty sunburn. 

Do take a break. If you're feeling lightheaded or dizzy take the time to find some shade and sit down for a while to collect yourself. Many venues have an amphitheater with seats in the shade so take advantage of that and sit in there for a bit. 

Don't overdo it. If you feel tired, don't push yourself. If you need a rest, take one. You're only human. 

Do take the time out to see a band that you've never heard of if you have the time. You never know, you could find one of your new favorite bands. 

Do have fun! Warped tour only comes once a year so make the best of it and have fun!

Warped Tour Advice

I wanna make sure all my fellow Warped Tour attendees (no matter what day you're going) are well-prepared. So I've composed a list for you all : )

Pack your bag the night before: don't rush around the morning you're leaving if it can be avoided. Make sure you've got everything ready before the big day

Eat breakfast: i know skipping breakfast might be tempting (especially if you're up earlier than usual) but it'll probably be your last meal in an air-conditioned building for a few hours. Also, make sure it's something with substance

Buy water: while you're buying your three cans to donate/skip ahead in line, grab two bottles of water. One should be that giant-ass sized one; SAVE THE GIANT WATER BOTTLE. It has to be sealed and unopened if you wanna take it in with you. Have a smaller one for while you're waiting in line and can throw away before walking in.

Visit an ATM beforehand: yes there will be machines to withdraw cash from, but you'll have to pay a usage fee. Fees suck. Make sure you stop at an ATM (maybe even the day before) so that you have cash for all the goodies to buy

Make food: bring some sandwiches or what not for when you're starving and racing across the venue to see the next band on your list

Bring a backpack: it'll be useful to stuff all your crap in, plus you'll need a place for the free stuff you can get. Not to mention all the stuff you might buy

Ziploc bags: if it rains (which can always happen) make sure you have ziploc bags to keep things such as your wallet, phone, or camera nice and dry. Bring some extras for your friends too

Towels: you're gonna get gross and sweaty, so have some cheap towels in your bag to wipe away the nasty sweat

Watch: save your phone battery and wear a watch to check the time

Extra socks: if it rains, you might not be able to do anything about your shoes. But at least you'll have a pair of dry socks

Sunglasses: the sun will not be your friend this day

Hat: you never know when your head will need shade

Cash: maybe some merch tents will take credit card, but play it save and bring cash just in case

Sunscreen: doesn't matter if it's lotion or spray on - you'll need that shit to protect your skin. Make sure to reapply as needed

Poncho: like, the cheap one from the dollar store. You never know when you'll need it

Hand sanitizer: i got one hyphenated word for ya - Porta-Potties

Phone charger: there ARE charging stations and they MIGHT charge you. Bring your charger in case you end up needing it, but definitely try to save your battery

Sharpie: band members can't sign with thin air. Not to mention you'll be able to mark your setlist (which will be available for $2 when you walk into the venue)

Earplugs: you'll need those if you're gonna be side stage

Extra bobby pins/hair ties: ladies, and maybe some gents, and think that's self explanatory
