morpheus backstory, let’s go! i’m excited for this one, because it’s something i’ve been tight-lipped about ever since i first started running their blog over 7 years ago... you guys will finally know what morpheus’s deal with aggron is!!
[part 1] / [part 2] / [part 3]
In Morpheus's early life, they fell as a meteor/egg and crash landed in a mountain where an Aron named Rocco was digging.
Rocco is really fascinated with this little alien, as they don't seem to be able to hear, see, or speak... but they can sense Rocco via psychic powers, and can read his immediate thoughts, and can communicate via telepathy.
Rocco names them "Buddy."
Rocco wants more out of life than just hiding and struggling for survival, and thinks that it's possible to build a society someday. Rocco ends up sharing these hopes and dreams with Buddy.
The duo become best friends, and end up making friends with Crag the Archen and Pebbles the Shieldon. Crag is impish and the clown of the group, while Pebbles is more levelheaded and reasonable.
The four all explore the dinosaur world together and it's super cute.
Buddy and Rocco come across a colony of Kabuto resting in a beach cave, and notice the green one. Rocco feels bad because without a society to care for the green one, it'll probably die off.
Meanwhile, there's the feral Tyrantrum king, and his son who calls himself Fang. Fang seems to be evolving into a less feral Pokémon compared to his father.
He's got a spunky Bowser Jr.-esque personality and likes bullying Rocco and friends, but never actually harms them.
Unlike the king though, who often times would attack them on sight.
Rocco has been spending a lot of his life training to be stronger, though. He wants to defeat the Tyrantrum king who's been terrorizing the Pokémon population, and rally them together.
He eventually learns that Buddy can grant wishes, and uses that power frequently to help him evolve. This starts putting a strain on Buddy though. Buddy suffers a lot of pain through their stomach eye, but granting wishes seems to relieve it. However, this leaves Buddy really tired.
But eventually Rocco is strong enough that he evolves into an Aggron and is ready to challenge the Tyrantrum king. He asks for Buddy to stay away from the fight, but Buddy grants him a surge of power before the battle.
With buddy's powers, Rocco mega evolves and takes the king down. However, cowering behind a couple rocks is Fang, who, despite not having a true emotional connection to the king, is still horrified by the display. Rocco doesn't want to risk Fang coming back for revenge one day, so he easily kills Fang as well.
He takes the King's Rock from the fallen Tyrantrum king's head and becomes the new king.
The whole dino squad eventually evolves, and despite Rocco's horrible murder of Fang, he actually manages to create a stable society where Pokémon are working together to create shelters and find food. It's actually thriving really well.
Rocco decides he wants to raise an heir to carry on once he's gone though, so he asks his old childhood friend Spring the Lairon if she'd be willing to carry the child, and she agrees.
They name the daughter Silver, who Buddy adores as she grows up.
But as Rocco has been using Buddy's wish-granting powers to help society thrive, Buddy's pain spikes have been fluctuating at a dangerous rate that often causes them massive amounts of pain. Rocco tries to comfort and distract Buddy, but it doesn't seem to work. It puts a huge strain on their relationship.
Rocco also selfishly wished to extend his own lifespan, which is an intense wish for a Jirachi to grant, and this causes Buddy additional strain.
Buddy feels like they're going to die every day. Pebbles ends up talking with Buddy, wondering if this is a terminal issue and that Buddy may eventually die. Buddy considers this. But Rocco overhears this conversation and is outraged by it.
He confronts Pebbles about it, and he decides he won't allow Pebbles to put those thoughts in Buddy's head any more, so he kills her by leaving her to sink in a tar pit.
This distresses Crag immensely, as them and Pebbles were actually romantic partners by then, and Archeops mate for life. Crag goes out to look for Pebbles. Rocco told Buddy not to go with them, but Buddy didn't listen.
While searching, the two are ambushed by Tide, the shiny Kabutops. Rocco had taken them under his wing when he started building society, and they were now Rocco's assassin for people who threatened Rocco's rule.
Tide attacked Crag, and Buddy tried to protect them, but in the process got their face and eyes cut. Tide realizes their mistake and flees, but Buddy is too late to help Crag.
Buddy passes out, and awakens to find their face bandaged and under Rocco's care. He feigns sympathy for Crag's death but assures Buddy that Tide will “no longer be an issue.” (As punishment for harming Buddy, Rocco had sought out Tide and killed them.)
After two of their close friends dying, though, Buddy isn't the same. They're emotionally distant and their pain spikes have never been worse. Their powers seem to be enhancing though, and they use this power to dig deeper into Rocco's memories, where they discover the truth.
During Buddy's power spike, they turn into a Jirachi form known as "Red Giant". It's a form Buddy turns into when they're about to die.
In this state, Buddy is erratic and angry and bursting with power, so they use that adrenaline to kill Rocco.
After which, their powers became so unstable that they unleashed a Doom Desire attack that wiped out the dinosaurs, and would have proceeded to destroy the whole planet if left unchecked.
(old art again sorry!!!)
A shiny Arceus appears to Buddy, and puts them into an everlasting sleep that they cannot wake from, in order to protect the Earth.
Buddy wasn't able to travel to others' dreams right away, but after a time they were conscious in their sleep from their pain.
Having recently gone through this experience, they're suffering through chronic nightmares and trauma. Jirachi can also literally die of heartbreak, as when you have a strong psychic connection, your mind is rewired for your partner. When your relationships are gone, it's like critical parts of a machine getting ripped out, and you're left dynfunctional, and sometimes dying. Being asleep, though, Buddy's mind is conserved and they won't go into that lethal catatonic shutdown and can't die.
Their Doom Desire energy is also building up again, even in their sleep.
Oliver, the Being of Knowledge (including knowledge of the end of the world), was very concerned about Buddy, this bomb-waiting-to-happen. Arceus put them to sleep to "save the world", but Oliver was concerned about how their Doom Desire energy would just build up again.
Now that Buddy is having emotional distress, and rapid energy buildup again, Oliver is seeing apocalyptic future sights.
Lake trio members can have their souls leave their body while they're asleep at their lakes. Knowing Buddy's location in space, Oliver's soul goes to check up on them and visit them in their dreams.
Ollie discovers that Buddy is very conscious, and attempts to befriend them. Their goals are to keep Buddy's emotions calm, and study them, hopefully finding a way to prevent the explosion.
They approach Buddy and interact with them. After gaining their trust, Oliver teaches Buddy about the world. They teach them about other legendary Pokémon, all that's in the universe, and many things in general. They learned of other Jirachi, and then was able to have friends of their same lifespan alongside the lake trio, and learn about their own species/behavior.
They also met Solaris and Artemis, the Jirachi leaders of the Milky Way galaxy, who gave them the name Morpheus, replacing the name that Rocco had given them.
Eventually, Oliver and Morpheus become good friends, and Oliver establishes a psychic connection with Morpheus. Once close enough friends, Oliver is able to use their powers to suppress some of Morpheus' emotions and memories. Once very close, Ollie's able to do what's equivalent to an "emotional pain split", where they take the brunt of half of Morpheus's emotions, and give Morpheus their positive emotions instead.
Because of Oliver, Morpheus is substantially more emotionally stable. Morpheus used Oliver to cope with everything and projected their feelings onto Oliver, and became a bit clingy. Oliver replaced Morpheus's missing psychic connection from their previous relationships, making them immensely more stable.
Oliver teaches Morpheus how to use their psychic powers to their full potential.
They also show Morpheus how to completely control their dreams, and suppress their nightmares and constantly lucid dream, so their mind won't create dreams for them. While asleep, you're connected to long-term memories, and Morpheus learns how to disconnect from them.
Oliver also studies Morpheus, and kept all studies and findings in journals. They did many low-key "experiments" to discover how Morpheus worked.
With their psychic connection, Oliver teaches Morpheus how to find their dream location, and how to visit other people in their dreams.
Oliver is also the one who gave Morpheus the idea to make deals with people. Oliver discovered that Morpheus needs to relieve their wish energy, so they suggested the deal making high-low energy cycle that Morpheus does in present day.
Morpheus was able to abandon their old self, and be generally happy again. Knowing that the world would recover from their past destruction, Oliver helped Morpheus forgive themself and repress it. They was able to see the earth through Oliver's memories, and relive all their past earth sensations. Oliver showed them every way how the new world developed, and Morpheus was excited - they had always truly loved the earth, and were very eager to learn anything about it from Oliver.
There were no more apocalyptic future sights as Oliver was able to keep Morpheus stable. The outlook was positive for everyone, believing that a way could be discovered to prevent or negate the explosion.
But as millions of years passed, Morpheus's pain progressed. As Oliver's studies continued and they analyzed Morpheus, they only discovered more and more that nothing could be done about the pent up Doom Desire energy. Morpheus began to adopt a more spiteful and volatile attitude towards everything, gave up their friends, and cut out Artemis and Solaris for being unable to convince Arceus to just let them die.
Oliver was the last person Morpheus cut off from. Oliver had been calm and never spoke against Morpheus, but was internally very concerned and worried about the impending explosion. Morpheus got angry at knowing Oliver was scared of them, and angry at themself - how they were hopeless, dying, and internally devastated that it turns out they were only going to cause mass death again.
Oliver's presence hurt them, so they blocked them out as well.
Because of this, Morpheus's emotions are no longer in check, and erratic again.
Oliver, still holding a psychic connection with Morpheus, continued to be in-tune with Morpheus's emotions. They tried to keep them suppressed from a far distance, but much less successfully.
Because of the close connection, they also received many apocalyptic future visions.
Oliver's depression eventually got to them, and they wiped their own memories.
Because of Oliver's memory wipe, absolutely nothing was left to suppress Morpheus's emotions or memories, which will lead to Morpheus eventually recollecting all of their suppressed memories at once. They don't know that Oliver wiped their memories since it happened recently.
So Morpheus's "cruel/evil" behavior in the Undead/Reborn Mew plotline is a recent change due to Oliver's absence.
But even at their absolute worst, they still preferred to target the souls of evil Pokémon, or Pokémon with the potential to become evil. Sometimes innocent Pokémon like Caroline/Michelle are caught in the crossfire, but Morpheus is too desperate to keep themself and the universe alive to be picky about the souls they can get.
Jackie would go on to watch as Morpheus recollects all these memories, comforting them and helping them come to terms with their death.

[part 1] / [part 2]
In this new timeline, Caroline stays around Michelle's farm for a couple years.
Michelle accidentally outs herself as a lesbian when talking to her father, who abuses her to the point of evolving into a Flaaffy so that she can start dating potential males on the farm.
She hides inside a barn in shame until Caroline finds her and decides it's time for them to leave the farm together.
Caroline transforms into a Mightyena, and together they fake Michelle's death by making it seem like a Mightyena broke into a barn and dragged her away. It's not enough to fool Seymore's nose, but after Caroline tells him about what Roy did to Michelle, he lets the two go, telling Caroline that he'll let Roy know "the bad news."
Michelle is still apprehensive about leaving. While she hates her father, she doesn't want her home and siblings to be plagued by the Mightyena pack without Caroline's protection.
Caroline decides to deal with the Mightyena problem at its source: If they can drive the pack leader out of the territory, they'll have no choice but to abandon their attacks on the farm.
Michelle is worried for Caroline's safety but trusts her enough to take on the mission alone. Michelle has something she wants to take with her before they leave together, anyway.
Caroline meets Madelyn, and is surprised by how domesticated she acts. Caroline states her case for Michelle's farm and asks Madelyn if the pack can leave it alone.
Madelyn says that her pack will obey her and that she is willing to help, but wants to stay at the farm. Caroline is willing to take Madelyn there but it's up to the farm to accept her.
Madelyn meets Seymore who welcomes her. Seymore introduces Madelyn to his puppies (Rover and Clover), and Madelyn cries in joy.
She'd missed out on the sweetness of raising her own puppies, and missed being cared for by humans, so the farm is perfect for her.
Caroline, feeling assured that things will work out fine for the farm, decides to leave and meet back up with Michelle.
Michelle gives Caroline a heart-shaped locket that used to belong to her mother as thanks for everything. She confesses her feelings to Caroline, even though she knows it might be more harm than good for Caroline.
Caroline is taken aback - she hasn't been interested in dating anyone out of the fear of outliving them. While she is unsure, she decides to hook up with Michelle in a hasty impulse, hoping it'll heal her heart.
Caroline used to freely roam around the world before she met Michelle, and now she can go back to that lifestyle. The two begin to explore Unova together, hitting a lot of the spots that are nostalgic for Caroline.
Along the way, Caroline gives a blue bow to Michelle as a gift.
One spot in particular is Liberty Garden.
Caroline explains she'd once been friends with a Victini named Timothy. Once, she'd tried to visit Timothy, but wasn't allowed to enter the lighthouse. Assuming the worst, Caroline decided to leave and hasn't seen Timothy since.
It had been at least a hundred years since then, so Caroline had assumed Timothy was no longer alive now. Entering the lighthouse, she hears Timothy's familiar voice and was thrown out of it.
Timothy is surprised as well, but that surprise turns to anger as she accuses Caroline of abandoning her. Caroline tries to explain that she thought Timothy was dead, but in the heat of the moment, Timothy throws fire at Caroline and injures her. Realizing she's not welcome, Caroline leaves with Michelle.
Timothy instantly regrets what she's done, and kicks herself for not asking for Caroline's help.
Timothy had been imprisoned in the lighthouse and used video games and computers to cope, but with Caroline gone, her chances of escape slipped away.
She falls back into a cycle of despair until she's approached by Morpheus in her dreams, who offers to help. Timothy rejects Morpheus's deal, but Morpheus keeps reappearing here and there, trying to "befriend" her.
However, Morpheus is distracted by the voice of Jackie. Jackie's soul had not ceased to exist when Morpheus absorbed it, but instead lied deep within Morpheus's repressed subconscious thoughts.
Morpheus does eventually help Timothy off the island, and helps her find Caroline again. Morpheus is hoping to violently turn Timothy against Caroline, but Jackie keeps invading Morpheus's thoughts and somehow manages to convince them to leave those two alone.
Morpheus has more on their mind than just Jackie distracting them, though. Memories of their past that they’d previously suppressed have been starting to come back, and it’s making it difficult for them to seek out Pokémon to make deals with.
Timothy and Caroline reconcile, and she joins Caroline and Michelle's travel party.
Timothy and Caroline pick up where they left off for real this time and immediately hit it off together. Michelle notices how happy Caroline and Timothy are together. She thinks about how Caroline knew Timothy since before she was even born, and how the two are probably the same age... She starts feeling a bit like a third wheel.
Caroline notices this and decides to prove her dedication to Michelle by revisiting the place where her old partner used to live, to prove that she's not sad about it at all and that she's totally moved on.
Michelle isn't convinced, but reluctantly goes along with it. Timothy comes too.
On the way over, Caroline explains who her old partner was to Timothy and Michelle.
Their name was Erin - born as a female Nidoran, but eventually grew to identify with being nonbinary as they evolved, calling themself a Nidoriné. Caroline helped them acquire Pinkan berries to turn them pink - so they wouldn't have to be blue like a Nidorina or purple like a Nidorino.
They lived a happy life together, but Erin eventually grew old and passed away, with Caroline staying as young as ever. Caroline resented her long lifespan ever since.
Telling this story doesn't make Michelle feel better, but Timothy sympathizes with Caroline, knowing what it's like.
So on Pokémon Island, (the Pokémon Snap location), Caroline inspects the Pinkan Berry garden she once grew with Erin. It is still well-maintained, to Caroline's surprise.
A couple of pink Nidoran introduce themselves as the caretakers. One is a trans boy, the other a trans girl. The two took the berries so no one could tell them apart. Caroline's happy to see Erin's influence affecting later generations of Nidoran, even decades later.
The two Nidoran offer the trio to stay the night, and they start talking about ghost stories. they speak of the legend of a Nidoriné, wandering aimlessly through the Pokémon Island's cave.
"It's looking for something, we're sure of it!
Caroline feels a bit offended by the story. She hates that Erin's memory has been twisted into some spooky ghost story. She leaves in a huff, and Michelle and Timothy try to calm her down.
Michelle tries to talk Caroline down, saying "It's just a story, just fergit about it... They probably didn't even know about Erin."
Timothy suggests settling it by checking out the cave, and Caroline is determined to agree with Timothy.
Michelle resigns with a somewhat sad smile. She's too scared to follow them, because if the ghost story is true, she feels her heart can't take it. She stays with the Nidoran couple. "Ah'm too tired, Ah'm gonna sleep... Y'all have fun though."
Spooky cave hijinks ensue. There's no sign of the ghost Nidoriné, though. But they do see a constellation in the cave shaped like a Mewtwo that makes Caroline very uneasy.
Meanwhile, at the same time, Michelle is chitchatting with the Nidoran couple. They say the ghost story wasn't really real, they just made it up to tease Caroline and friends to check out the spooky cave.
Michelle playfully calls them both jerks and decides to go get Caroline and Timothy and tell them the whole thing was a sham. She uses her tail to light up the dark mountain area. She sees something pink and shining around the cave entrance and goes to pick it up... and from behind her, a voice says,
"Hey, you found my crystal! Nice!"
Meanwhile, Caroline and Timothy start talking about life and stuff in the cave when there's suddenly a cave-in. Timothy's fire is too weak to melt the ice, so the two start talking about angsty stuff while they're trapped. They huddle to keep warm.
Caroline tells Timothy,
"Like, don't tell Michelle I said this, but... I was... really happy to know you were still alive."
"I think she already knowth that."
"I feel... bad. I really like being friends with her a lot, yeah, but... When she told me she had a crush on me, I just kinda... jumped on it."
"You juthst got with her right away?"
"I mean, it was a change from how I normally make friends with people! Normally I just... make friends with people for a few years, and just... leave. I was going to do the same to Michelle, but then the Mightyena problem came up, and she kept convincing me to stay for longer and longer... I started to... like her more than most friends? So I just got with her to see... The new kinds of things I'd feel, if I watched her live out her life."
"Well, how do you feel?"
"Like shit!! I'm not treating her like my equal at all! She deserves better than me."
“Nah, thhit, Care... Are you gonna tell her?"
"I can't just TELL her that, it'd KILL her! I was kinda just... hoping to keep the relationship going until SHE gets sick of ME."
"Caroline, that'th not healthy."
"I know, I suck."
"You thhould tell her."
"Maybe."
Back with Michelle, she goes through the cave herself. She finds the cave-in and quickly finds out Caroline and Timothy are trapped behind there, and tries moving the icy rocks. Michelle tightens her focus and spontaneously learns Focus Punch, using it to shatter one of the rocks. The rest topple and Caroline can fly out with Timothy. Caroline's had enough adventure for one day and desperately heads back to their camp.
The three decide to go back to camp. As they're about to sleep, Michelle tells Caroline and Timothy that the Nidoran made up the ghost story. Caroline seems a little disappointed, which Michelle teases her about. Caroline looks a little guilty but Michelle laughs it off.
Timothy says, "Hey, ith there thomething you know that we don't?" Michelle brushes it off and tells them good night.
The next morning the crew decides to pack up and get ready to go. They say goodbye to the Nidoran duo, but Caroline still wants to talk to Michelle. She tries to say she has something to talk about with Michelle, but Michelle says she wants to say something, too. Caroline lets Michelle talk first.
"We need t'see new 'mons," Michelle says, with a confident, but sad smile.
This throws both Caroline and Timothy for a loop. Caroline asks what Michelle means.
"Ah don't regret bein' friends with ya, Care. But ah think... Maybe you 'n I aren't t'best fer each other, romantically. Ah know you'll only keep thinkin' about Erin when you see me, how one day you'll outlive me..."
Caroline looks a bit guilty.
"We can't be right, wit' that fear in ya. And... you've got friends like Timothy now, who'll live way longer than me, Ah bet."
Caroline responds, "That's... That's okay! You... you'll still travel with us, right?"
Michelle shakes her head. "Ah thought it ovah... And t'be honest, the only reason ah traveled with ya was because Ah knew it made YOU happy. Ah'd rather jist... settle down here fer a while."
Caroline starts crying, but Michelle wipes her tears away. "Ye're still mah best friend, Care. And ya can always come visit."
Caroline hugs Michelle tightly. "I'm gonna miss you."
"'Ey, ye're not gonna be by yaself, y'know? You 'n Timothy are gonna be real happy together, Ah can tell."
Caroline gets back, flustered. "W-What?? You make it sound like we're gonna hook up or something!" Michelle giggles slyly.
Timothy in the background is beet red. "Where'd that thudden confidenthe come from? Who are you and what'd you do with Michelle?!"
Michelle laughs again before turning back to Caroline. "Ah almost fergot. Ah meant t'give ya this."
She hands Caroline a Mewnium Z. Caroline has a minor dizzy spell/vision of a mysterious Mew. Michelle and Timothy notice and ask if she's okay. Caroline says she's fine, she just felt a strong surge of power from touching it... She asks Michelle where she found it.
Michelle winks. "Th'ghost told me ta give it to ya."
Caroline gives Michelle a playful nudge. "Ha! Liar!"
Caroline puts the Mewnium Z in the heart locket.
The three exchange goodbyes, and Timothy and Caroline fly away.
After the two leave, Erin's ghost appears behind Michelle.
They thank Michelle for carrying out their unfinished business. Michelle thanks Erin for talking to her about Caroline, and asks if they're going to pass on. Erin says "Nah, it's too fun being a ghost story. Plus, it feels nice having someone new to talk to."
Next, Caroline and Timothy go to Kalos, and the topic comes up about why Caroline is so upset about the Mewtwo constellation.
Humans once captured Caroline to create a Mewtwo. She only managed to get away because that Mewtwo blew up the lab and fled. The Mewtwo had once tried chasing Caroline down, but one day just... stopped. Timothy helps Caroline work up the bravery to confront them, just as long as Caroline promises she'll go back to exploring Unova.
In the nameless cave of Kalos, Caroline attempts to make conversation with the Mewtwo (named Celanori), who says very little. They cause a cave-in, preventing Timothy from entering, and challenges Caroline to a battle.
"Show me what you have learned in your long life."
Caroline is unfocused and does not want to fight, so she ends up getting tossed around a bit.
She tries using the Mewnium Z she received from Michelle and Erin, but the power fizzles out.
Celanori realizes they are fighting an unfair match and stops.
Celanori then tells Caroline they once sought her out in search of purpose, but when she fled, they came to their cave to meditate on the meaning of life instead. Celanori calmly tells Caroline that she is ignoring and running from her problems, leading to festering anxieties. Celanori realizes that Caroline is just as lost as they once were, and tells her the key to satisfaction is not to search for it. Relieved and satisfied that they have achieved wisdom, they fly out of their cave, busting the rocks out of the way, and go to explore the world themself.
Timothy rushes past the debris to help Caroline, who simply scoffs and brushes it off.
"Pssh... They can't know me just by looking at me for five minutes like that."
Caroline and Timothy return to Unova and visit Twist Mountain, where they unearth an Aggron skull. Timothy is eager to Jurassic Park it back to life, but Caroline is uneasy about the cloning process humans use. Timothy manages to convince her, and the two leave the skull by the resurrection lab.
They meet the revived Aggron, named Silver, who's totally fine with hanging out in the prehistoric Pokémon enclosure.
Apparently, she used to be the daughter of an ancient Aggron king who had cast her aside as his heir once he found out how to be immortal. But one day a great cataclysm struck the dinosaurs, wiping out most except some Aggron and Tyranitar species who survived deep in the mountain caves.
Silver had to work to regain the trust of her fellow Pokémon after having such a corrupt father, but now she's free of that expectation and happy to see that the world lives on.
Caroline and Timothy thank her for the story and move on to their next location.
They move on to the Cave of Being, where they meet the discolored lake trio.
They are Oliver (Ollie) the Uxie, Calliope (Callie) the Mesprit, and Riley.
Oliver once had an "accident" where they wiped their own memories. Afterwards, the lake trio fled Sinnoh to live in one single cave to help care for Ollie in their amnesiac state.
The incident had caused Oliver to lose their coloration as well, turning white colored and babylike.
Calliope tells Caroline that her and Riley suffered a similar problem in the initial fallout of "losing" their sibling - Calliope cried so intensely that she lost all emotion, and Riley was so griefstruck that they wouldn't move or do anything.
The two were able to recover by shifting their motivations - Callie began to focus on recovering the knowledge that Oliver lost, while Riley is so overwhelmed with emotions that it's all they can think about, now.
The problem is that they don't know how to trigger the same reaction in Oliver to make them become the new Being of Willpower.
Caroline tries talking to Ollie, and somehow manages to inspire them to re-experience the world all over again. They feel like they can do whatever they want to now, and they gain their blue color.
Calliope and Riley are shocked but thank Caroline. "It's not the same, but it's a start."
Caroline smiles for the siblings, but feels bitter inside, feeling like her own sibling, Marzipan, would never do the same for her. Caroline feels lonely and somewhat wants to reconnect with her sibling.
Marzipan and Caroline once lived in a place called Rainbow Cloud, but separated when Marz wanted to live in space and Caroline wanted to see Earth.
While Caroline and Timothy are there, Calliope tells them some Sinnoh lore like how Palkia made Jirachi, Dialga made Celebi, and Giratina made... something else.
Calliope doesn't get deep into it, but she also mentions things about Morpheus - a Jirachi that seeks out the life energy of long-living Pokemon in order to keep themself alive.
This makes Timothy feel kinda messed up and betrayed, realizing that Morpheus had tried to target her, but gets over it when she remembers that Morpheus seems to have stopped talking to her.
Either way, Caroline decides to go to space to meet up with Marzipan again.
In space, she meets a lot of different kinds of Jirachi, including one that's a bit strange.
Mayhem, as their name implies, likes causing destruction and chaos in Jirachi society. They go up to Caroline and say "HEY!! YOU LOOK LIKE A FLUFFY DEUS!!" and leaves without elaborating. Caroline is very confused but brushes off the encounter.
Because Caroline and Marzipan are twins though, they have a psychic connection that helps them find each other from miles apart. Now that she's in space, she can sense where Marzipan is much easier.
Caroline hunts down Marz, who has been living as a Jirachi via Transform. Caroline accuses Marz of abandoning her. Marz tries to justify their actions by saying that they're just... so much HAPPIER in space, with lots of Jirachi friends, etc... But it all just makes Caroline angry and jealous so she leaves. Marz feels a little bad but not enough to mend fences with Caroline.
Timothy tries to convince Caroline to not lash out like she once did to Caroline, but Caroline's replies, "Whatever, let's go, they're not even sorry," and the two return to earth.
On Earth, Caroline starts feeling a bit bitter.
She thinks about Marz bragging about how great their life is, she thinks about how Silver seems content, how Celanori seems to have all the answers to life, and how the lake trio's relationship is starting to heal... But she still can't find any sense of purpose herself.
Timothy tries to comfort her by saying Caroline doesn't need a purpose, she's free to do whatever she wants... but Caroline still has a desire to make connections other than Timothy.
Timothy then gets the idea to expand Caroline's friend group by introducing her to Timothy's old online friends.
Rudy the Shaymin, Byte the Porygon2, Woody the Celebi, and Quincy the Manaphy.
In Celadon City, Caroline and Timothy meet Byte and Rudy who have actually hooked up and started dating. Byte convinced Rudy to help some help coping with their flower allergy and has been physically recovering.
Timothy and Rudy bond over having partners that basically saved their lives. Meanwhile Caroline vents to Byte about struggling to find her place in the world, and Byte empathizes because they struggled adapting from the digital world to the real one.
Caroline and Timothy go to the Ilex Forest next, and meet up with Woody and Quincy.
Quincy likes to travel and doesn't understand Woody's interest in video games at all so Caroline immediately hits it off with them.
Caroline also bonds with Woody, who wistfully talks about how she wishes she could stay with Quincy long term, but has to stay and guard the forest. Caroline jokes about using time travel to stay with them longer, to which Woody acts guilty. Caroline laughs it off, saying she'd do the same thing with Erin if she could have. The two become fast friends.
Caroline thanks Timothy for introducing her to her friends. She's starting to feel better and less lonely, but still wishes for some sort of family relation, too.
Mayhem appears and harasses the two, planting the idea in Caroline's head to go to the Ruins of Alph because Deus just looks SO much like Caroline, it's like they're RELATED or something. Caroline is hesitant but Mayhem teleports them there like, "ok have fun!!"
Caroline and Timothy explore the Ruins of Alph. There's a faint humming noise there that makes them feel thoroughly spooked when suddenly Deus, caretaker of the ruins, appears to break the tension.
Deus comments about Caroline's sharp fangs and claws, a signature feature of those from Deus's bloodline. They like to ramble about the universe and the power of the Unown, and talks (somewhat bitterly) about Genesis, the universe's first Mew. Caroline is fascinated by the insight into Mew culture.
Deus wins over Caroline by hearing her vent about her life.
"Y'know, maybe space life would've suited me better. I dunno. if I left with my sibling Marz, maybe I wouldn't have these issues? Kike, I would be with a lot more of my kind. Everyone out there lives for millions of years, so I'd never be scared of losing them."
Deus says, "You deserve to see the space side of your heritage, too. I would show you, if I could."
"That would be nice," Caroline responds.
And while Deus tells Caroline that they cannot leave for space together, there is something else that can be done.
In the past, Arceus used the Unown's power to create the world. Afterwards, the Unown were given to Genesis, who used them to populate the earth with various species.
Deus was once renowned for creating viruses, which, while seeming evil, actually allowed life to evolve and grow stronger.
Deus offers to show Caroline that power, by meeting and using the Unown.
"Though it may be a very distant relationship, you ARE my descendant, so this should work," they say.
Caroline follows Deus's instructions, becoming surrounded by Unown, including four shiny Unown. G, C, A, and T. These four Unown allow the user to modify the DNA of themself or others.
However, Deus's instructions cause Caroline to use the Unown to swap Caroline and Deus's bio-signatures, tricking the psychic rocks floating around Deus to go to Caroline.
The Unown, tricked into thinking Deus is Caroline, now obey Deus. Deus takes the four shiny GCAT Unown and flees, abandoning Caroline.
The rocks surrounding Caroline now pull her back and keep her from leaving the Ruins of Alph. This leads to obvious despair before Caroline settles down. Timothy stays to comfort her.
Celanori, however, crosses upon Deus due to their psychic connection with Caroline.
They immediately know something is wrong. They observe the GCAT Unown and know where to go.
They meet Caroline, who feels degraded and miserable, thinking that Cel is her to mock her, but instead they want to help. Caroline explains that she can't use the Unown anymore. Cel tries, but it only works for mew.
Caroline is about to give up hope when Timothy suggests Marzipan could help. Celanori agrees to fly out and find Marz to tell them off.
Meanwhile Mayhem weakly flops into the Ruins of Alph, wailing about their chaotic powers being stolen by Deus. Caroline is pissed that Mayhem was Deus's accomplice, but Mayhem begs Caroline to help them get their powers back to they can get revenge on Deus. Caroline agrees, but internally she thinks, "Once I'm done with them, YOU'RE next."
Marzipan comes back to help and takes Caroline's place as an apology, and Caroline and Timothy go out to space for revenge. Marzipan makes Caroline promise to come back for them.
So, meanwhile, while ALL of this was happening, Morpheus and Jackie had been talking and bonding for a long time. Being trapped in Morpheus's subconscious, Jackie has learned more about Morpheus than anyone else.
* (Including their Tragic Backstory ™ which we do not have time to cover here, remind me to make a separate post about this!)
Jackie knows why Morpheus grants wishes - it's to curb the excess energy that they're constantly absorbing through their stomach eye. Due to a birth defect, this eye will never close, and will continue to absorb energy until Morpheus explodes into a supernova.
Morpheus has been alive for so long that they've accumulated enough energy that their explosion would be large enough create a black hole that would wipe out the entire universe.
Granting wishes expels energy, but these powerful wishes leave them on the cusp of death every time, so they absorb the life energy of Pokémon to stabilize their energy levels.
The problem is that they are still passively absorbing energy, and it's been estimated that they will reach maximum energy capacity at 256 million years, finally exploding and consuming everything.
Jackie knows how Morpheus feels, to an extent, about feeling like you have to kill people or else everyone will die. Gladys had justified her actions in the same way, saying that her colony would die off without her to protect it.
But Jackie also points out that this method isn't sustainable for Morpheus, and someday soon, their energy would eventually become too much and destroy everything without warning.
Rather than waiting for that to eventually happen, Jackie suggests that Morpheus should reach out to the legendary Pokémon of the universe, who may be able to come through with a plan to stop Morpheus's explosion from consuming everything.
Morpheus reluctantly agrees, and the legendary Pokémon all agree to use several layers of light screen surrounding Morpheus's sleeping body to block the explosion. Every legendary Psychic Pokémon that can be gathered in space appears to help form this massive light screen barrier. Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, and every Jirachi and Mew, not just from the Milky Way galaxy, but from the whole universe.
Morpheus needs to grant a wish to start dying though, so they use their powers to bring Jackie back to life to allow her a few final moments on Earth. (As a bonus, she's fully transitioned, which is something she’d wanted but never spoke to anyone about. Morpheus knew though, because they could read her mind.)
Suddenly, the sky lights up red because Morpheus's Doom Desire explosion has finally begun.
Caroline logically thinks, "This is probably Deus's fault."
She can seek out Deus because Deus swapped DNA with her, and Caroline swapped with Marzipan, so there's a psychic "sibling" connection again. They trace Deus to space, where the Light Screen is shining bright.
Deus begins to monologue about how when Morpheus exploded in the past, it wiped out the dinosaurs and caused a huge spike in the evolution of life. So, logically, if they explode again, perhaps even the whole universe can evolve on the scale Earth did.
Deus is going to break the Light Screen containing Morpheus's explosion, then in the ruins of the universe, they will create a new one as its new Arceus. Caroline thinks that's all Granbullcrap.
She uses Timothy's victory power to power up her moves. Mayhem uses Trick Room to speed up Caroline and Celanori to match Deus's level. Celanori Mega Evolves into Mewtwo Y and the two tag-team Deus.
It gets close, with Deus feeling weak, when the Trick Room wears off. Deus attacks Cel, who they think is the bigger threat. Deus is like "You're of no concern to me, Caroline, I can finish you off right now-"
But then Caroline manages to pull off the Z-Move Genesis Supernova and obliterates Deus. Deus is all anime villain, "THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE...!! NO ONE WAS ABLE TO FIND THE MEWNIUM Z...!!" (/joke)
So Deus gets beaten, and Caroline wishes terrible thoughts on Deus which causes the Unown to obey her and Deus gets sucked into a glitchy looking portal and disappears.
Caroline is shocked but turns her attention to the glowing Doom Desire explosion ahead. Caroline and Timothy say their peace as the end might be near, before Caroline once again uses Timothy's power to boost her strength before she uses the Unown to learn Light Screen herself.
She goes off to help contain the explosion with everyone else. Timothy can't help, but still holds onto her as she pushes the explosion back.
The Pokémon on earth see the glowing red sky and pray for those important to them.
The lake trio remembers how Caroline inspired them to their new roles, and decide to fly out to help, as well.
When Silver looks at the sky, she's reminded of the cataclysm that shook the dinosaur world.
Silver prays for buddy, the young shiny Jirachi she knew in the distant past.
Byte, Rudy, Woody, and Quincy all pray for Timothy.
Michelle prays for Caroline.
Jackie prays for Morpheus, and for Caroline and Timothy, wherever they are...
Then, finally... the explosion fades. It was perfectly contained. The Light Screen fades and everyone celebrates.
(old art sorryyyy sobs)
Caroline is approached by Genesis themself, the one she saw in her vision when she got the Mewnium Z.
Genesis nods at her and thanks her for what she'd done with Deus. Caroline asks where Deus disappeared to when Caroline used the Unown, but Genesis only vaguely answers...
Mayhem begs Genesis for their powers back, but Genesis is like "Only if you apologize to every single galaxy leader you've caused trouble for." Mayhem reluctantly flies off.
Caroline remembers to ask Genesis for help, to save Marzipan who sacrificed themself for Caroline to be here. Genesis nods and takes the GCAT Unown, flying back to earth.
In the end, Genesis frees Marzipan.
Jackie looks up at the sky, sighing in relief, and walks away.
Michelle gets visited by Caroline and Timothy, and Michelle is looking a lot tougher now. Her wool is shaggy and she's started wearing her bow as a headband instead. She's started eating the Pinkan Berries too.
She's a lot more confident now, especially now that she's hooked up with a friendly Aipom she met in the time Caroline was gone.
Caroline sits together with Michelle and Timothy and jokes, "Y'know, all my life led to me helping to save the universe, so I guess I don't have any right to complain any more, haha."
That's pretty much the full end of the story, but Jackie actually gets her own adventure too.
After Morpheus's explosion, all the souls they had absorbed scattered across Earth, left in a comatose/intangible state. Jackie, formerly being one of them, actually has the ability to see them and wake them, allowing them to reach their respective afterlives.
While awakening lost souls, she eventually meets Thanatos, who's a servant of Giratina. It's her job to collect the more violent evil souls and take them to the Distortion World to be devoured by Giratina.
Since Morpheus preferred to make deals with evil people or people who had strong potential to become evil, Jackie ends up finding a lot of lost souls that Thanatos needs to collect.
That’s unfortunately all I had planned for these characters but tune in next time to hear Morpheus’s angst???
