The landscape in San Pedro De Atacama looks like Mars. The town itself is made for tourism but I love walking the dirt streets aligned with Adobe style buildings and seeing and meeting people from all over the world (lots of French and German). The things to do outside of town are out of this world-space tours, geothermal fields, valley of the moon, salt and alpine lakes and so much more. Cafayate Wine Tasting Part 1: Skip Mendoza, sorry Mendocino friends and come to Cafayate, the wine region of the Northwest. I love love love this small off-the-path town where the main attraction is wine tasting and hiking! My two favorite funtivities. Malbec, Cabarnet Sauvignon and the popular Torrontés are grown here. I prefer 'vino tintos' until I met Torrontes a few years ago, so I was excited to learn more about this grape. I love this region more than Mendoza because it's more of a 'pueblo' then a city (part of the Salta province) and the vineyards outside of town are accessible via bike or cheap taxi ride and there are tons of bodegas for wine tasting inside town. Today I explored the vineyards outside the main downtown. My first visit was at an authentic family vineyard called Domingo Molina where I got a private tour (thank you Spanish and low tourist season) and tasting. It's harvest season until the end of April so I was lucky enough to see and learn about the particular process of Torrontés (grape shown on video) wine making along with Malbec. The whole one-on-one educational experience was awesome and definitely made up for my Mendoza disappointment. #warrioroffun. (at Domingo Molina Vineyards, Cafayate Argentina)
Finally! I got to sit at the very front and top level of a double decker bus, the icing on the cake if you love the window seat and are passing through beautiful landscapes in the middle of the day on Ruta 40! Ruta 40 or La Cuarenta is sometimes compared to the U.S's Route 66, but I've done Route 66 and there is no comparison. The landscapes from Patagonia to the northwest are dramatically different and more beautiful. I'm now headed to the NW of Argentina to experience the desert, see lots of cactuses and dramatic rock formations and drink more wine in Cafayate. The other wine region. #warrioroffun
