Michael was grieving over Sam, telling this woman, Selene, the story reopened the wound that he had been trying to hide since his fiance’s death. However, there was something else about Selene that drew him to her, that made him curious, and perhaps interested in moving on from Sam.
He insisted on going with her to the coven, despite knowing that if he went back, he would be killed. He didn’t know what they would do to Selene if he let her go alone. He was worried about her, and was prepared to follow her out that door.
Their lips touched in a hesitant kiss, and it was like Michael’s entire world stopped, at least for a moment. It had ended all too soon, and he found his wrist being chained to the chair. He looked from the chain, to Selene again.
He held her face in his hands. He had seen the blistering burns on her face just moments before, and now, they were all healed up, as if nothing had happened. He couldn’t but stare, although her face slowly moved in his hand so they were now looking into each other’s eyes rather than him at her healed cheek.
Her hand came up to touch his as he cupped her cheek, and he watched as her eyes darted down to his lips and his did the same to hers. He leaned forward and gently pressed their lips together. The first time their lips touched it was hesitant, as if they were both testing the waters.
He pulled away, and her eyes darted back down to his lips and suddenly they couldn’t get enough of each other’s taste. They kissed again and again, and he felt her hands come up and push the jacket off of his shoulders. The cloth fell to the floor and he moved to reach behind her. His hand found the zipper of her corset and he pulled it down.
The fact that he was alive was a miracle in itself. He had been dead, the life had left his body. But here he was, alive and well, with just a scar on his chest to show the damage that had been done to him. He knew the sun was out and he had to hurry before Selene burned to death. He had been revived, only to lose his mate.
He stopped when he reached the top of the stairs and he stared at her, jaw dropping some. She was there, standing in the sunlight.
He waited until she turned to face him to start walking over. It was over, finally. Both Marcus and William were dead, and he and Selene had killed them. He was getting sick of the blood that was on his hands. However, if it meant they could be together, it would be alright.
He saw that she was trying to say something, but could tell she was struggling. The tear that rolled down her face startled him, and he reached to cup her cheek, wiping away the tear. She leaned forward and pressed their lips together. He rested his other hand on her face. He could tell how much this moment meant to Selene, with the way she was kissing him. There wasn’t too much pressure, but just enough. He could feel the tears still dripping onto his hand. He knew Selene had to be this shaken up to be crying. After all, he was alive after all.
Michael had traveled all this way to get here, to the Nordic Coven, where he heard his mate was staying. It was freezing, and he could feel hypothermia getting close to setting in. He needed to see her, though. He had heard whispers that Selene thought he was dead, that she had seen Marius’s memories and saw what the lycan had done to him. He couldn’t let Selene continue to think that. He needed her to know that he was alive, and that he wanted to be with her.
However, their reunion had been delayed, when he collapsed pretty much upon reaching the coven, the cold finally setting in. A few of the vampires brought the hybrid to a room to recoperate, but he kept asking for Selene. He wanted to see Selene. His mate more important to him than regaining his strength. The vampires he asked never responded to his questions about Selene, as if he was more of a prisoner than the mate of Selene.
It was three days after his arrival that Selene was finally brought in. He could tell it was her even without looking at her. Her scent drew nearer and he knew her heartbeat better than anyone else. When the door opened, he heard her sharp intake of breath and he finally looked up at her.
“Michael.” She seemed so shocked to see him here, alive and well. She was at his side in a blink of an eye and hesitated before touching his face. He saw the emotion rush through her eyes as she realized that it was really him, and that he was alive and here.
“Hey, Selene.” He smiled at her, which resulted in her letting out a choked sob, pulling him into a hug before pressing their lips together in a passionate kiss, because after years of being separated, they were finally together once again.
Michael held his mate’s hand, wiping the sweat off her brow as she brought their son into the world. Two years after they reunited, and a year after Eve came back into their lives, Selene and Michael decided to try for another baby. A year after that, they finally succeeded and Selene was pregnant.
The pregnancy had been messy, with several near losses on both Selene and their baby’s life. Even now, the birth was rather hectic. After all, Selene was a vampire elder, and giving birth to a hybrid baby. There was a lot of pressure for nothing to go wrong. And of course, their baby had decided to be born a full month ahead of schedule and it was just sheer luck that Michael had been here for the birth of their son.
“One more push and we’ll have Lucian in our arms.” He reassured his mate, kissing her head. They had agreed to name the baby after the lycan who really was the reason they were here now. “You can do this Selene.” He hated seeing her in so much pain, but it would be worth it when they were able to hold their son.
He heard his mate cry out in agony at the next contraction, and then he heard it, their son’s cry as he was brought into the world. Michael smiled and kissed her cheek before going to go check on their son. He helped the healers clean the baby off and cut the umbilical cord before returning with their tiny son in his arms.
“You did wonderful, Selene.” He said, seeing the tired look on her face as she took their son. She held him to her chest and looked up at him.
“It’s our son, Michael. We did it.” She smiled at him and looked down at their baby, who was already falling asleep in his mother’s arms. “Our family. You, Eve, Lucian and I… After everything we’ve been through..” She yawned and ran a finger against her baby’s cheeks.
Michael tilted her face up and pressed a light kiss to her lips. “After everything we’ve been through, we’re finally together.”
