Sea Star Wasting: Causes & What You Can Do
Sea Star Wasting: Causes & What You Can Do The recent die-off of sea stars across the Pacific Ocean – an event known as sea star wasting disease – has baffled marine biologists for years. Paratuberculosis is a production limiting disease of ruminants, also causes infection in non-ruminants and birds; caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation, intermittent diarrhea, progressive weight loss and ultimately death of animal. In a herd; vertical as well as horizontal transmission occurs as a result of fecal contamination, through colostrum or common feeding and watering. It is diagnosed by clinical examination and through certain biochemical and serological tests such as Polymerase chain reaction, Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and Ager gel immunodiffusion test. It is considered as non-curable disease and can be controlled by vaccine, proper management and culling of infected animals.
